Before doing a firmware update yesterday, I wanted to update my archive. When I checked the update (copy/update of an existing archive) I was surprised to see some errors. I thought it might have something to do with this update happening during the time that my scheduled shadow protect incremental might have kicked in. So I reran the update to the archive. This time I did not even wait for it to finish as again static snapshot errors were coming up.

What does this mean ? I have not had this issue before, so I am wondering how to deal with it in future.
I subsequently created a new archive from scratch and this went through fine.

    Hi Beethoven

You don't want to do an archive update when shadow protect is doing an incremental. Since the new archive went fine, I suspect the archive got corrupted. Just make sure you don't let the two run together.

    Pete,
yes, this was my first assumption. It was Sunday and I had not considered the scheduled incremental. So that would explain the first failed update but why was the second update to the archive again showing the error. I am sure that at that time nothing else was running anymore. If the archive got corrupted the first time, would the second update from the primary snapshot not have taken care of that?

In theory yes. But I have deliberately stopped an update on occasion, which does mess up the archive. Sometime just redoing makes it right, but I prefer not to chance it so I delete the archive and create a new one. Same time, so safer. I do this since I count on the archives being good, so why take chances.
