Thanks Patrick. I downloaded and did an install over. Can't see what changed, but it's running fine.

    Peter2150 and co22 re Shadow Defender v1.4.0.558

I've just installed it clean in Xp sp 3 and I've just unticked the hibernation tick mentioned by co22 as I don't use hibernation.
Also if you don't want automatic updates uncheck that in Administration as it defaults to ticked.
I've sent my email now so waiting for reply.

    Hi sdmod
I have Automatic updates unchecked also, with the thinking that it would be impossible for Shadow Defender to update itself in Shadow Mode. ;)

As far as I know Shadow Defender keeps the settings that you make in Shadow Mode through a re-boot.

I can confirm it does. I changed them in shadow mode expecting to have to reset them, and they were the same.

Question about SD. In Shadow Mode, if I install a program, restart and it's "gone", will there still be remnants left behind, like burried in the hd? If I use a program like Undelete, will it still find anything left over? I know when I wipe my hd's, i use Acronis Diskwiper, and it wipes it 3x over to make sure it's basically gone. How does SD not leave any traces behind?

SD is not a disk wiper. Its purpose is to isolate the OS from changes made in the virtual session after a reboot. I suppose that these changes or the remnants of them can be retrieved with certain tools.

    Hi DX2
In a word NO, also the more [MB's] you can allow it to write to Ram Memory [as Write Cache] the less it will even need to use your HD['s] :thumb:

    Hello DX2,

You can also encrypt the write cache so if any data overflowed the ram cache (if selected) it would be hard to recover if it did make it to disk...

Hi guys... Looks like SD doesn't survive reboot... is there anyway to test program under protected mode that survive reboot?
beside using backup image or vm

That is by design. You can't install anything that requires a reboot. If it is just a file, use the commit feature. I suppose you could commit the entire drive, but it would really be time consumming.

Okay Peter... usually I needed to try new software and importantly to try windows update... to make sure it doesn't mess up my system...
so go back to rely on snapshot/imaging program

Have you looked at Raxco's Instant Recovery. That is what I use for that.

Another cool option. I have had it on with no obvious impact.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this (apologies in advance). I have just installed 558 on Win 8.1and get this message every time I restart

" Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just gathering some error information then we'll restart for you.FAT_FILE_SYSTEM (diskpt.sys)".

I had the same experience with an earlier version in April this year. At the same time I also had the "Z: is in a low free space" since cured. I wrote to Tony who asked what version I was using but subsequently didn't reply again. I have previously had a good experience of SD and would really like to be able to use it again, and welcome any advice.

I'm glad you posted your problem as I get almost the same message (a blue screen anyway). The only difference is the wording of the error, and in my case it happened twice in 6 months while in shadow mode after at least 2-3 hours of operation. I don't use SD everyday, therefore if I had used it daily it would have happened probably more often. My hunch is that it may have something to do with the 'write cache memory' for which I usually assign 3GB RAM, and when this memory is used up it might trigger the error. It is only my guess, hopefully Tony will look into it.

I'm trying to use SD without any write cache and see if it happens again. Win 8 here, and it happened with version 553 and now 558.
