I am looking at getting a notebook as opposed to a laptop because of the weight factor when travelling and intend to use it for 'playing' with Linux distros (Win 8 will be overwritten). I already have a desktop with Win 7 which I use for my photographic work so HDD size is not an issue.
Basically, would notebooks like these be suitable for any Linux distro I wanted to install

I do not want to spend a lot of money on one as this is only going to be my secondary machine.
I used to run linux on an old XP machine till it died and have wanted to get back to it ever since.

Many thanks for any advice tips etc.

Most of the time, the Wifi card is a critical component that does not work properly.
I use the thinkpad x60 from http://shop.gluglug.org.uk .It is light and should run with every Gnu/Linux OS without any issues.
For the first notebook you mentioned one of the first search results gave me this post

where someone complains about issues with Ubuntu.
