Since I now have separate SSD drive dedicated as my OS drive, no other data partition on the SSD, I made a disk image using DS yesterday.
I think I will give DS one more try later when I need to restore the image later on.
this is on a UEFI computer with secure boot on.
will update later whether the restore will work or not.

I know that with Drive Snapshot, if you restoring from DOS, you have to restore the incremental backup as well as the system backup. So you have to restore 2 backups in DOS. But in a recovery Windows environment you just have to restore the incremental and it restore all, so is much faster that way.

Are you sure ? Even from a Win PE environment you have to restore the baseline and the last differential backup. It's automated, you just have to select the desired differential image and snapshot will restore the baseline then the selected differential. Unless this has changed in recent versions.

Yes i am, because i've used DOS restore. It's two separate DOS command lines. One for the original image and the other for the differential. In DOS, you can not restore the differential until the baseline image is layed down first. The differential goes over the top. If you put them in a bat file, it's all automated as they can both be restored together before rebooting. If you try to restore the differential, it fails - it needs the baseline restored from you.

Unfortunately, the command line of Drive Snapshot in DOS does not have as many features as the Windows version and is not wise enough to know the associated original belongs to a certain differential. Although a differential image is usually small and in a batch, it's automatic. You just have to take note which images belong together.

It's not likely users will use DOS restore as Win PE is superior and there is also the exceptional system image restore on Windows reboot. I don't see why they can't make a 32bit DOS, that would restore backups faster. In fact they have started attempt with FreeDOS-32 in 2010. A custom made 32/64bit restore environment as in a mini os without any features just made for running programs. Yes there is already WinPe but i referring to something far tinier and simpler without all the enormous overhead of Windows that can access your entire memory. Of course the restore software would have to be specifically custom made for that environment. So much could be dispensed with though ie. multi user. If anybody interested in this sort of thing, take a look at recent KolibriOS(fork) and MeneetOS both programmed entirely in assembler for x86/x64 requiring 8MB and boot in 10 seconds on a very slow PC. Now you see how slow Windows really is.

As your aware, restoring from Win PE will automatically restore the associated original from the selected differential automatically, all for you.

Actually I think I was saying the same thing. It's true that the command lines available with the Dos version of snapshot, that is snapshot running under DOS, are quite limited. But even in a Win PE environment, snapshot does restore the baseline first then the selected diff, well it's how I remember it anyway, it might have changed since then.

I think you can't just using snapshot distribution, you have to use some other tool to build a WinPE or WinRE bootable media and be able to access snapshot.exe from there. For instance, for old systems, Hiren Boot CD is a perfect solution. It doesn't work though for more recent systems AFAIK.

You can just use your Win7 disk to run DS. Nothing special needed.

I could run DS via TBlauncher from IFW WinPE :)

What would be a welcome addition to Drive Snapshot would be a Snapshot Image browser in a similar vein to AX64 but with all the advantages of differentials.

I'm not familiar with AX64's image browser, but what's wrong with the one included with DS?

Has anyone noticed something different in these builds from the 1.43 version released in February?

    Hi Brian,

Not much, if anything, in the way of feature differences. But there's been changes in the size of the executable since then, so I suspect bug-fixes (not that I've encountered any). :doubt:

    Regards,
    Wendi

Maybe one day we will be granted release notes but this has been a request present for quite some time, without any response from DS publisher, AFAIK.

Hi guys... yesterday just playing around the first time with DS... love the simplicity of it...
but what puzzles me is the instruction is not very clear enough in the DS site...

When I try to restore image to a brand new drive, I right click on the new drive and choose Restore Partition Structure
the structure is not like the original that image was made (system reserve, system drive partition and data partition)
DS make 4-5 partition... so I rightclick again and choose Restore MBR then the partition structure changed to the original one.

is there a better guide for using DS than from the DS website?
