There should be a law against sites/companies etc making you opt out. Its making YOU do the extra leg work for something you never initiated in the first place. Its similar to the pushy installers that have their settings on the default "yes" to install that useless toolbar or other excess baggage.. Its a gross invasion of your privacy. Its a waste of time, and more than likely doesn't opt you at all. Wouldn't surprise me if they harvest something from you while you're opting out....Ive just read a link from wilders ....

I posted a thread a while back about the ad companies in the 40s jotting down license plate numbers of passing cars so they'd know how/where their billboards should be placed (judging by where the people lived, based on the plate numbers, thus judging what routes they were taking to work) https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/marketing-advertising-placement-analysis-1940s.364922/

So it doesn't surprise me at all they're having a field day with the internet. Having opt-out stuff is the same as obscuring their tactics in legal disclaimers that no one reads, check boxes in installers that are checked by default, etc etc. A law pops up, they find loopholes (NSA). As long as they benefit and their tactics work on more users than not they'll keep dishing them out. It's an ancient game that probably predates currency.

I agree, the burden should be on the service providers to opt users into a service. Not the other way around. I find it amusing they track you online, unless you agree to opt out with a cookie. I'm at the point where I'm convinced companies, governments, etc. think "We the People" are idiots. Perhaps some of us are? Most commercials portray people as being too stupid to figure simple appliances and tasks. I think its a disgusting practice.

I know it's rarely popular to insult "people" in general, but seriously...the average person is not that sharp. George Carlin had a bit where he talked about how stupid people were. One of the gold nuggets was "Think of how stupid the average person is...and then realize half of em are stupider than that."

Just check out this hidden camera show. The premise is the guy performs random illusions right in front of people and passes them off as legit. The whole point is to illustrate how simply acting normal and speaking with assuredness is all it takes to convince people of essentially anything. And I mean anything.

Or check out Penn & Teller's tv show "BS". They had 8 seasons on Showtime debunking nonsense that the general public believes without batting an eye.
