Can anyone help me with this?! I had Windows installation disc from which I copied files to my pc desktop. Now I want to create bootable Iso file to store it on my backup drive for future usage. Using Nero burning rom I open new>choosing dvd from as compilation>new>adding the files I copied>choosing Image recorder>burn and save type as Iso. It creates Iso image but it's not bootable, when I burn it and restart pc it does not boot from the disc (bios first boot device is set to dvd drive). What am I doing wrong?
Windows doesn’t have a built-in way to easily create ISO files, although modern versions of Windows — Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 — can all natively mount ISO files without any additional software. To actually create an ISO file from your own physical disc, you’ll need to get a third-party program that can do so. There are many, many tools for this — and many of them are packed with junkware. Beware! When downloading Windows freeware, Ninite is a safe place to get a variety of other tools for doing this, such as the one I use... ImgBurn. ImgBurn can easily handle the creation of ISO images from the source disk as well as the burning of those very same ISO images should you need a CD/DVD in the future. Some of these programs — like ImgBurn — do include junkware in their installers IF you get them from elsewhere other than Ninite. If you insist on using NERO, here's a YouTube video to show you how to do what you want...
It seems that this installs the program in the background, you don´t know what version it´s installaing, or the details of the installation, or even what it´s installing. Better to download the normal installer, do a customized install and disable the "junkware" manually, if any.
TheRollbackFrog Thanks for offering those programs. The main reason I prefer Nero is that it can set password on dvd. As for youtube video I already saw that but the way he does (extras>save track as) requires a disc on the dvd recorder, I want to make bootable Iso from the files I have on the desktop. Brian K Yes, I have that windows DVD, its Seven. I have recently downloaded Win 10 Iso and had no problem with burning it and making bootable with Nero. My problem is in making bootable disc from already made-up bootable disc. Also tried to burn those Windows files directly without making Iso but still-no boot, although I remember doing the same for usb flash drive, worked. I just don't understand whats the purpose of making Iso if it's not bootable.
I don't think those boot image files show with "show hidden files" or "Show protected OS files". They are really hidden.
then it seems it can't be done bootable iso from Windows installation disc? why it had no problem then with usb flash drive, when I did the same and just copied all the files on it?!
Files I had on my desktop from windows installation disc, I just copied to ntfs formatted usb and that made it bootable.
@white31 Too much of a hassle I see, doing it with Nero. Why don't you get UltraISO two or three clicks and you get a perfect iso image. https://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/download.htm
Well, I will try another program if I can't find the way to make it, I was just looking if anyone using Nero might know the correct way to do it.
I don't boot from optical media if I can avoid it. Booting from UFDs is much faster. I've removed the optical drives from our laptops and replaced them with hard drives.
White31, as Brian has mentioned, when you copy the contents of a CD/DVD, you DO NOT have all that is needed to produce a BOOTable CD/DVD. UFDs are different in making them BOOTable. Some of the other ideas mentioned, UltraISO for example, have the ability to generate those missing pieces of DATA required to produce a BOOTable CD/DVD. ...and why won't you just mount your DVD distribution and create your ISO via ImgBurn or UltraIso (or PowerISO, etc.)? The ISO image created will contain all that special BOOT data required for a BOOTable CD/DVD.
It seems I have to. I just never used those programs and first need to get a little familiar with them. Will try it tomorrow, thanks.
sorry, I can't say for sure why it worked, I don't have that usb drive anymore. I just remember that I didn't use any additional program and the files were from windows 8.1 installation disc and also foramtted the usb drive in ntfs. TheRollbackFrog ok, will try imgBurn. aslo there is CDBurnerXP which seems quite popular in my search results.
Your choice. The installers from Ninite have all been "massaged" and if they contained any JunkWare (like ImgBurn normally has <OpenCandy>), it's been removed from the installers. The site is very trustworthy... they sell a very useful service extension to the basic product.
Just in case someone is interested or facing the same problem, I have managed to make bootable Iso with Nero Burning Rom after some readings and watching this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50xJrDmILNE It appears that there is no some hidden files, but etfsboot.exe is such a file which is needed to load boot information.
