I am sure many of us here have heard of Hard Disk Sentinel. It is a great application for keeping an eye on your hard drives and SSDs, but I also find the Bootable DOS Edition to be a very handy tool for checking the state of hard drives on computers that won't boot. By the way... It can also be used on a bootable USB device. Do any of you use Hard Disk Sentinel Windows or DOS version?
I prefer it over HDTune Pro because it's a bit more accurate. I not tried the DOS version (welcome 2016) but maybe it's worth to look at it.

I have used the Pro Windows version since getting it free as a giveaway. I prefer it to CrystalDiskInfo which I was using previously, and other such tools, as it gives a very descriptive overview of any problems found, and says if they are serious or not. I find it very useful for ensuring any used hard drives I buy have no issues. I did not know about the DOS version. But, I'd probably never have any use for it.
The support from the developer is first rate. When I switched over to using an SSD and HDS came up to say that the TRIM function was not enabled and so the disk was not operating at full capacity (HDS was showing performance at 80%) he guided me through swapping drives (from the Marvell one that came with my system for AHCI) to the standard Windows one and thereby getting the drive operating at peak efficiency...which was great. I would thoroughly recommend the application and am secure in the knowledge that HDS is monitoring things properly and accurately. Regards, Baldrick
I grabbed also the pro version when it was as a giveaway.. Yes, I have tried it in the past, but I prefer Hard Disk Sentinel. I also like the way it stays resident and continually monitors. I guess it's a personal choice.

I have had it installed on my XP Pro desktop for a few years...very good monitoring of my hard drives. But, now I needed a new license for my Surface Book.
How do you make it use a combined tray icon? I don't want 4 separate ones for each drive bloating up my tray.
Go to Configuration > Hard Disk Drives Double-click the "tray icon" column for each drive to set either "visible" or not. You can also select "Display total disk activity on a single tray icon".
That's not the health or temperature though, and I already hacker Process Hacker monitoring Disk I/O. But I guess "Display only the highest temperature on tray" works out. Thanks.
I use the Status Window (right-click the tray icon, Show Status Window) to keep an eye on drive health and temperatures.
after rethinking this. I looked at a program I have used sine the 90's and MS even used a cut-rate version of their software for windows. it is called Diskeeper. it is not free however. I was looking at their help file and they do scan and defrag SSD drives and test the drives health. something I don't have and don't need. just ordered 2-8 gig sticks for my 4 year old dell. had 4 gig , now going to 16 gig. why it took so long I don't know.
