I am looking for an encryption program which offers a choice of Serpent algorithm. It is not included in GPG.

I checked Google but only found some websites where first I need to upload a file, which I don't want.

    I want a standalone utility.

There used to be a nice utility with the name FineCrypt which offered several choices, but unfortunately this company closed and there is no information available on future developments.

But VeraCrypt is for creating encrypted volumes and not for file encryption I suppose.

    Can individual files be encrypted?

    PeaZip has FreeArc nicely integrated.

PeaZip will also let you build a self-extracting/decrypting executable so you can encrypt a file(s) and or folder(s) with Serpent256 and decrypt them on another Windows system without PeaZip itself.

So you would run TheFile.exe and enter your password and extraction/decryption takes place into the folder where the exe is located.

Otherwise, an encrypted file is TheFile.arc and you'll need PeaZip (or FreeArc).

When encrypting there are several levels of compression including no compression.

I've been using PeaZip for years. It's GUI is intuitive and comprehensive, much more so than FreeArc itself.

It's also one of the most feature rich archival products available. And it's free.

    peazip dot org

(For stuff I store in the cloud, I build an exe with Arc/Serpent256 and then build an exe of that with 7z/AES256. Each with a different password, of course.)

VeraCrypt can only encrypt volumes and containers, not individual files. Try Freearc.

I checked into Peazip, but could not find a GUI option to change the cipher to Serpent256. Care to explain a bit how you use Peazip to create an archive with Serpent256 encryption?

Under Advanced, on the lower right, for Encryption use the drop-down to select the algorithm.

    Hi ichito,

Blowfish has recently been in the news, but not, as I recall, in a positive way, despite its impeccable origin. Sorry, can't remember the reference. I'll have to search for it, and will post when I find it.

The creator of Blowfish said this almost 10 years ago:
