Either way , it is an idiotic policy , and the very people who might represent a genuine threat will be wise to it , and will act accordingly . Once again the thinking seems to be " If we can't think of anything intelligent to do , let's just do something " eg. ... make passengers remove shoes at airports .
On my laptop computer, I have both the Windows OS drive, and the Ubuntu /home/ directory encrypted, and 2 out of 3 of the data partitions on a 2nd HDD were also encrypted by BitLocker and Linux LUKS, respectively. I am traveling soon, hope this will not get me into trouble.
According to the NSA (IIRC), "Linux users are extremists". So there's one point against you. And add the fact that you encrypt your drive, chances are you're gonna run into trouble
Actually, border crossings is partially accurate. The "routine search" and possible confiscation of your digital storage devices (as it would be for a briefcase full of documents) exists within the 100 mile border zone. Everything wrong anywhere, even in the Land of the Free, is the result of evil - a human invention from Day One and updated on a regular basis. Kind of like in Brazil, with its globally recognized iconic image a huge statue of Jesus overlooking its second largest city, having one of the highest rates of femicide on the planet and being another major player in the illicit drug trade.

Go to any Linux forum and you'll see that the NSA is very right Of course, being an extremist about how their computer software functions vs. the connotation they assert with the word extremist are two very different things. Linux users are too busy compiling kernels, trying to fix broken GTK themes, tweaking a rc.lua/rc.xml/screen/vim/emacs/etc file, smugly lurking on Window's forums, or arguing with each other about the best cpu scheduler to be even remotely dangerous to the state. It seems however that no matter where you are in the world, any attempt to exercise control over your own life is considered extremist nowadays...
I developed a new strategy My current computer has 3 drive bays. When I cross the boarder I leave all three drives in the computer but only have one physically connected. That way if they want to search they find the OS I want them to see. When I cross the boarder I pop the lid andphysically connect the other drives.
