I am using a Fujitsu Lifebook that is 3 or so years old. When I bought it USB 3 was fairly new so perhaps this is why I have the problem I am having. The PC came with 2 USB 2 and 2 USB 3 ports. When I use the USB 3 ports I can hear background sounds of the PC working through the speakers. There is no background sound when I use the USB 2 ports. Because of this I have the drive with my music files plugged into a USB 2 port (its very irritating to hear the background noise when listening to a song when the drive is plugged into the USB 3 port). Can I fix this via a software fix or would I need to do a hardware upgrade?
Is it only the internal speakers? Or does it happen out the headphone jack too? USB sound card? I would suspect hardware or interference issues. You've probably already made sure the chipset, USB, and sound drivers are up to date. You could check if muting any of the unused audio inputs helps. Not much you can plug/unplug or rearrange on a laptop.

It happens with the headphone jack when I plug an external drive into the USB 3 port but the noise is missing if the same drive is plugged into a USB 2 port. I will try muting unused audio inputs, thanks for the suggestion.
Thank you I will give this a try. Much appreciated. I installed the driver and there is about a 75% improvement. Thank you for the suggestion, its much better now.
You are welcome. Drivers are weird. I've had instances where the "current" Driver isn't optimal or even work. Most times a previous version will work. Every once in a while only the Driver for the newest windows will work. Like I said Drivers are weird. With some Bluetooth I've gone through installing uninstalling dozens of versions before getting it right.
