Running Win 7 Pro and have just encountered an issue with my Iomega 250GB external HGG. It has been working until yesterday. Now when I connect it to the usb outlet on my pc and power it up it does not appear as a computer drive - the light comes on and I can hear it spinning and then there is a clicking sound and it shuts down.

The drive is 6 years old - is there any hope for this drive in terms of use and content salvageablity? Or is it now a paperweight?

    Any input would be appreciated.

Consider it a paper weight. Always remember to make a backup of the back up of your data.

I reckon it's a mechanical problem, and may be fixable. Take it to the service center and confirm it.

I had the same exact problem and sequence of events with an Iomega external HDD after 7 months of use about two years ago.. Many others reported similar a similar problem on the Iomega Forum (like 10s of pages of posts reporting the same problem.)

Imoega's stock response is that it will gladly replace your Ext HDD if still under warranty but the lost data retrieval is your problem. Retrieval, however, while costly is possible. Likely $250+

The skinny on my Model was that Iomega was using a Seagate HDD that was later discovered to be subject to failure.

Good lesson for me. I now back-up on two external HDDs which I keep disconnected from my PC and connect only when I am not online to perform a backup.

You might find a suggested solution on the Iomega Ext HDD Forums, but I doubt it.

Welcome to The Iomega External HDD Paperweight Collector's Club.

Because of the sensitive info on my Iomega there is no one I would trust to attempt to repair it or retrieve the data. I doubt it can be repaired. You in all likelihood have a failed HDD.

    I feel your pain.
