Hi Guys, Tried to run Spinrite 6.0, on this Dell XPS 8700. At the select drives & partitions page. I had two choices: Drive 0 add on controller part 1 MBR followed by EFI Each had rather long messages, so I took a picture: The pic with red background = Drive 0 The pic with blue background with red letters = part 1 MBR followed by EFI Any insight greatly appreciated Thanks Rico
I use Macrium Reflect to make regular BU's, & would not use a recovery partition. 40 MB (OEM partition) PC = Dell shipped with Win 8, now uses Win 10. Would this be safe to remove? 750MB 450MB 8.51 GB Assume these 3 can go as Macrium is my choice. Is my thinking ok so far? EFI partition seems to be for UEFI bootim stays OEM partition seems to be for Dell Diagnostics, from F12 at boot, does not seem necessary. Covered by Win 10, Spinrite etc
Rico, The 750 MB Recovery partition is from Win8. It could go. The 450 MB Recovery partition is associated with Win10. It should stay. The 8.51 GB partition contains the Dell Win8 image. It could go. The 40 MB OEM diagnostic partition is not OS dependent. It could stay.
Hi Brian, Thanks! This is like you do it every 5 - 10 years so you have to learn it again from scratch. Note The picture & the arrows came from G-parted ver. 0.15.0 most buttons did not work! Just to understand, My goal is to merge the 8.51 GB partition with OS (C 1. What tool do you suggest? 2. is this format 8.51 GB then merge 3 or is this just expand OS (C to 8.51 GB So based on the above method: gone 8.51GB, 750MB, don't like dell diag 40Mb stay OS, 450MB, EFI Doing this do you think Spinrite will perform for drive 0?? Thanks a Million Rico
Rico, I use BootIt Bare Metal. It needs to be booted in MBR mode. Delete the 8.51 GB partition and you will now have 8.51 GB of Free Space. Slide the 450 MB partition to the end of the drive. Resize the Win10 partition larger to eliminate the Free Space. The Win10 partition should now be 8.51 GB larger. You should be able to do this with your GParted. I have no idea about Spinrite. I haven't used it for years.
Your GParted shows a partition that never appears in Disk Management. The 128 MB MSR. In a clean Win10 install this partition is 16 MB.
Thank You Brian K!!!!!!!! I just got this & do not understand, why this is a problem: This is the problem . . . ______________________ Sector Count 1,953,525,16x Drive Sectors unknown The reason all of this works under Windows is that Windows completely ignores the BIOS once the system has initially booted. (SpinRite will also be doing that in v6.1, but not yet.) So even on systems where the BIOS is old and newer larger drives are added, Windows is okay but SpinRite gets put off. I'm sure sorry we couldn't resolve this issue. If you purchased with the last 30-days, and wish to get a refund, please eMail our sales department <sales2015@grc.com> and include your order information along with a statement that have deleted all copies of SpinRite. Hopefully, this problem will be corrected in SpinRite 6.1 but we have no estimated release date for the next version of SpinRite.
