lurid headline - "kill" means NOT "click to play" as firefox introduced it long ago.

for opera and vivaldi pointless if pepperflash is not installed. opera can deactivate (pepper)flash and then it acts like "not installed" (in firefox it still can be detected in this mode, pity)

flash become more and more futile, in special with ads.

btw adobe air is the "super set" of flash - used for games aso.

Google has had 'click to play' or 'let me choose when to run' for many months now also. This is a plan to deprecate it over time starting in the 4th quarter. Top 10 sites will be whitelisted, everything else will default to HTML5.

 

More like year(s). I've used it for a long time now.

Amazon defaults to Silverlight, which is bearable.

Unfortunately Netflix and Hulu have kept Flash instead of upgrading to HTML5.

Flash is so crash prone on Mozilla, that sites literally take forever to load.

I had to get the browser to automatically kill a hanging crash container. Good for my sanity.

 

In FF, you could set plugin.scan.pid.all to false and it will fully hide Flash... but downside is, it also hides your other plugins!

 

Nooooo, so we will be doomed to use stupid, slow and insecure HTML5, that is just great.
I hope, that HTML5 disabler will work then as it works for youtube, I can not imagine using HTML5 at all.

 

Good news. I use click-to-play right now, but still hope that most content will be migrated from Flash to HTML5.

 

It will be years before flash is totally died out.HTML5 is still relatively new.

 

Silverlight is worse, it simply isn't as targeted due to popularity. Case in point: the old Java web plugin, thankfully that's gone.

I cannot speak for Hulu, but Netflix doesn't use flash, it uses HTML5 with EME (Encrypted Media Extensions, also known as "DRM").

Maybe it falls back to flash if you're using a browser that doesn't support EME.

Well relative to the Internet, everything becomes "old" the day after, heh.

too many companies still use flash, so there is going to be a period of time where services cannot be used, but I understand why chrome is doing it, it should kickstart these guys into action.

And why should those companies or the web in general be dictated by google as to what media is to be used.?
Its so terrible that corporations are ruining the basic principles of the web and its initial premise.

Dictated By Google? Lol. If Google was doing something and everyone hated it, they would get the flack, no websites would change, and Google would be forced to keep it to compete with other browsers.

The only reason Google is "getting away with it" or "dictating" as you so elegantly put it is because everyone is on their side for this specific matter, including the browser competition. Everyone wants flash to die, so this is an easy decision for Google that's not only supported by everyone but actually cheered on.

Try to keep the sensationalism to a minimum please!

not here, pre recorded videos are all html5, but on live streams I get the click to play window for flash.

maybe its recently been changed then I think I last watched a livestream about a month ago.

 

I have been using Vivaldi as my main browser without flash for quite a few weeks now and haven't experienced that many sites that need it. i use edge for the occasional website that needs flash. I am not missing flash at all. there are a few big company websites that wont work at all without flash which really need to change.

I can't wait for Flash to die, I haven't run into any problems with HTML 5 video yet.
