Hi, I appear to have a small problem with my hard drive.My hard drive is only 2 months old and yet is reporting one bad sector and the smart test did not even work as it returned a message saying in red that the test has failed as it could not read the disk. I am stumped with this as it is a relatively new disk drive.The drive is still perfectly functional but i am amazed i am getting this message.Is there some way to reset the smart monitor.? all i did was purchase the drive and insert into laptop and installed a linux distro.is there anything else i need to do with a new hard drive upon purchase.? Sorry im in the dark with this. Thanks.
That problem may not be small unless you can verify your SMART data... and even though it appears functional, it isn't (the SMART test doesn't work). If you have a tool that can look at your SMART data, look over the values for some sort of anomaly. If you don't have a tool. use the free DISKOVERY Tool Angstrom has produced... it contains everything you need to know about that disk... if it can be extracted, that is. This drive, in the end, should probably head back under WARRANTY and should be replaced. PS- DISKOVERY is NOT a Linux-based tool.
hello and thank you for your reply. Does encryption affect the smart test as i have noticed that LUKS is installed and runs at runlevel 5 so i dont know if that is relevant. Thanks.
The SMART test should be DATA insensitive. BTW, what SMART test are you running (that's kind of a generic description)?
Hello. I ran the short and extended tests and now i currently have a 337 bad sector count.This is a re-allocated sector count so it would appear sectors cannot be verified and are being moved to a new allocated area on the disk.The disk temperature never exceeds 33 degrees celsius.The current pending sector count is 1. Write error rate is 7588. Read error rate is 22. This is a 2 month old drive and my linux system seems to run ok.
For a device that young, those numbers are very high. If you have anything important on that drive, you should be backing it up often if you have no plans to replace it in the near term. I would replace it under WARRANTY.
Thank you kindly for the excellent responses.It sort of confirmed my fear that a replacement drive is much needed.Just goes to show new equipment can always be faulty. On a more positive note the operating system is still very swift as it always was but for how long is anyones guess.
Maybe you want to run a tool "that can refresh your hard disk signal by reading and writing each sector and hence making your disk more reliable for storage. It also informs you if there are any damaged/bad sectors so you know the right time to replace your disk". It is DiskFresh from Puran Software. Some times I use it.
I bought Toshiba 1TB Canvio usb 3.0 hard drive on my holiday trip,since it was relatively cheap compared to the price in my home country. After 3 months I started to get bad sectors, and after a bit over one year, the hard drive is dead. So I certainly suggest you get your drive replaced by warranty.
Must be faulty from the factory as i see no reason why this would happen especially after just 2 months.
