There is a "new" kid in town. Devuan Jessie 1.0 Beta was released a few hours ago. https://beta.devuan.org/ Panagiotis
I tested it's release with the Trinity desktop. It was amaazing. Trinity is the continuation of the glorious KDE 3.5 desktop: https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/images/d/d5/Tde_3_5_13_1_snapshot2.png Here's the LiveCD of Devuan with Trinity: http://exegnulinux.net/downloads/jessie/exegnu64_devuan_20160422.iso
I have no real issues with systemd, I prefer it on my laptop but I do not like using it on servers. What pissed me off with Debian is that they are forcing everyone on systemd. to quote Theodore "Ted" Ts'o, a leading Linux kernel developer and a Google engineer phrase http://www.zdnet.com/article/linus-torvalds-and-others-on-linuxs-systemd/ Panagiotis
I have not tested it yet but I will put it on a dedicated machine next week to see how it works. Panagiotis
I also don't have issues with systemd. What I'm really scared of is the sheer power it has, and how much of a dependency it has become. But then again, Linux is known for lacking standards and being a complete mess in this regard, so I don't think people have a moral right to "cry" when software like systemd emerges.
This answer is enough for me to stay away from systemd (at least on important systems) https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/2402#issuecomment-177907110 Panagiotis
I didn't say it is malicious. Just that is dangerous to mount efi as writable all the time. Some examples that can corrupt the uefi: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=919485 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/01/31/ubuntu_uefi_bricking_samsung_laptops/ https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Comm..._System_Partition_even_in_dual_boot_scenarios http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=UEFI-rm-root-directory I guess... Apple developers that protected the efi even from root (one needs to call the "bless" command to mount it) are stupid... Panagiotis
"the SystemD people want to change the kernel API so that you will have to use their code or write your own udev replacement that works with the new kernel" https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/systemd-devel/2014-May/019657.html
development of kdbus has apparently ceased, and they're starting again from scratch under the "BUS1" moniker. https://www.phoronix.com/forums/for...e-s-no-kdbus-or-bus1-for-the-linux-4-5-kernel An up-to-date list can be found here, dozens of "systemd-less" distros: http://without-systemd.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page FWIW, my faves from that list are TRIOS Linux and MX Linux (each has xfce desktop environment) and antiX Linux (has preinstalled icewm, jwm, and fluxbox desktops installed, switchable on-the-fly without logout).
I'm running Devuan 1.0 beta with MATE DE since a few days and it seems as solid as Jessie itself. Nice work.
Bit late to the party but I just now saw this thread. This. Exactly this. If theres anything I've learned about power in my life its that no one person, one technology, or one ideology should have too much power. An exception would be an ideology of freedom from any over-establishment of a power structure (in other words, liberty as a priority is about the only thing we cannot have enough of). I use a few systemd units and havent really had issues with it. However, it was pushed so hard and so many distro devs rabidly supported its integration- made me jumpy. And with the scope it is slowly amassing... I think alternatives like this are important even if others dont see the point or think its overly stubborn.
Exactly. If an issue with systemd arises (not with it's code, but with it's power, e.g. abuse of our freedom) these alternatives are already waiting
