How come Intel missed the new device markets? Edit: http://www.vox.com/2016/4/20/11463818/intel-iphone-mobile-revolution
I'll bet the decline in sales of personal computers coincides with the introduction of Windows 8 and beyond....
Yes, it's all the fault of Windows 8, clearly. Meanwhile those of us without memory of a goldfish recall that the decline was happening prior to Windows 8, which was supposed to "magically" prevent this completely natural decline and turn it around with expensive "ultrabooks". The PC market was inflated beyond all reason, people had to buy crappy laptops just to browse Facebook. Luckily the introduction of quality smartphones and tablets is shrinking the PC market back down to normal. It isn't going to "die", but you're free to believe that and all the sensationalist articles that come with it. People see a slide and automatically think death. Eventually the PC market will be back to pre "web 2.0" a.k.a. Facebook, Twitter, etc. levels and start growing at the normal level it was growing before the web boom. Back on topic: Intel using the PC market as an excuse for these layoffs is a total disgrace. Intel's profits are growing. This is to appease the shareholders.
Notice how nvidia dont have the same issue? The problem is intel are struggling now to progress at a good pace. Since sandy bridge the improvement between generations in terms of performance is in single digit %. Vs someone like nvidia who has just released pascal which doubles performance over maxwell. This problem means that people are not going to buy a new computer when its only 5% more powerful than their last one. Phone's are still in a earlier trend of their progression so frequent upgrades are still a thing, eventually they will hit the same problem tho. The main reason I upgraded my laptop was actually the GPU side of it, intel dont support their GPU's very well when they EOL, I found the GPU in my old laptop had no acceleration in modern browsers and web browsing was very painful. The cpu was weak also, but I tolerated it. The new laptop is still a intel GPU but its noticeably better and actually supported with modern drivers/APIs.
Exactly, I dont see the reason to buy a new CPU while my I7 2600k still give a run for its money compared to the new chips. I will just buy a new GPU, maybe a faster SSD and it will run fine for some more years.
ssd is a great way to make everything so smoother, my new laptop came with a hdd, and wow it reminded me how much of an impact it has as the OS drive. (obviously I have an ssd in there now)
