I didn't need it, and generally I beware this kind of program; anyway, for curiosity, I tried it today: may be it could be useful for someone, but be carefully: it has an option to search corrupted files and replace with the original. The effect is like - or worse - can be sfc /scannow: it restore the original files deleting those modified by legitimated applications - Acronis i.e.- .

    Just to report.

Yeah, I learned it the hard way as well, I just run all of its tweaks out of curiosity and I ended up doing a complete reinstall. :isay:
But as for fixing specific problems, it really helps, at least people are grateful for recommending it. But I would not touch it again.

What are you talking about? The system file check on the step 4 tab? That is nothing more than the sfc /scannow command in Windows. Windows repair doesnt replace a single file on the system. You also didnt say if you ran any of the repairs themselves and followed the directions.

The program is 95% registry related and that's also why it does a registry backup before hand so if something doesnt go right you can restore the registry to before the repairs.

I love how people bash my work when they dont understand how it even works. It is amazing how many people dont read.

So just like on the attached screen shot, it says the system file check is part of Windows, my program isnt checking and replacing anything.

I am not sure what it is about this site, but people here love to bash anything I make, from my Cleanmem tool to my windows repair and everything in between.

"hhhmmm, this didnt work the way I excepted. I wonder if something needs changed or I missed something, perhaps I should email the author and see if he knows or has any info on it. Nah, I will go bash it instead :)"

People dont seem to understand, I am one person who makes all of these tools. This isnt some big company, it is one guy, with 6 kids, and this guy freaking cares about his work and what people think of it.

    Thanks :)

I know it isn't perfect. There is always going to be unknown variables because of different software installed and such, but thanks to users who come to me with problems I work with them to find them out and I adjust the code as needed. The only way I can test it is on fresh installs of Windows with all updates. Run all repairs and make sure everything works like it should. After all that's what it aims to do, so what better way then on a fresh install.

But there is always the unknowns, such as different settings, registry changes, 3rd party software that changed something from the default and 3rd party programs that mess with the repairs. because of this my program will never be perfect, it cant be. But doesn't mean I wont try to get it as close to perfect as possible.

So the trick is to make sure to do a registry backup before hand and if anything goes nuts you can restore the registry and be back to what it was before. but if there is bad sectors on a drive, or some hardware problem a user doesn't know about then my program will get the blame.

I get a perfect 50/50 mix of comments from people who love it and where the program saved the day and others who hate it because they didn't understand the problem or the program and so by human nature the last program they use will get the blame.

If you look at the change log of the program you can see I care about it. I dont want to post links to my site here and make people think I am trying to get users to go to it, it is on my site and the rest of the link is /articles/pages/tweaking_com_windows_repair_change_log,1.html

That change log is from v1.0.0 to the most current, and it is BIG.

I am a tech, I run my own computer repair business and I add repairs that can be automated safely. So being one person and doing the late nights I do, bugs will happen. So I count on the users to let me know, then my ocd kicks in and I go on a programming run until I fix the bug. I can and will fix any bug I can replicate.

I have a few loyal and very kind users from this forum who message me every now and then and let me know if someone has a problem with my program here.

I am not sure what is better, people knowing tweaking.com is just one guy working his butt off or if they think it is a big company.

Would they trust a big company more than a little guy? Or does them knowing it is just one guy help them not to jump to conclusions and make them want to offer help more to fix anything they might encounter?

Sorry if I seem upset. I guess I am a little. With running a computer repair business and having customers call me all day long, to running tweaking and pcwintech and the forums on both plus the 30+ programs combined to maintain, then I have my wife and 6 kids who need me as well, I am always behind and stressed out.

So I guess I get rather upset when people dont come to me with a problem and instead make my work look bad. If I didnt care about my work it wouldnt bother me. But that fact is I care, way to much. Because of that I take this stuff to heart way to easy instead of letting it go. I think living with 6 females is getting to me lol

Maybe if you had read and understood what the tweaks did.(which from you having to re-install you clearly didnt) then issues would not appear.
These tools are for people who know what they are doing and the consequences involved.
Indeed i would suggest you leave these tools well alone in the future.

That is exactly, what this thread is about, thanks for confirming it. So you just say, that the majority of users should avoid it. :D

For the record, I know, what the tweaks do, I have created some tools to fix Windows myself. I was just wondering, if Windows Repair actually works as it is supposed to, obviously not always and as the author said himself, if the tool does not work, it is user's fault, because his software is perfect. :argh:

I never claimed to be an expert, I just like to help people and that way I learn. I actually recommend it all over the internet (as well as cleanmem), I even link it in my signature on tenforums and in my tweaks. I am just sad, that the author is such a mean person and consider his software to be godlike.

And I know it works, mostly: http://www.tenforums.com/antivirus-...rt-windows-firewall-service-2.html#post620928

For the record, one of the dangerous setting is Repair WMI, no backup can restore damage done by this command.
I prefer to use this one, before trying to repair it: winmgmt /salvagerepository

I've been using Windows Repair since version 1, and it is safe to use. The only problem I've had with it, was that at one point, my web browser Sleipnir would no longer launch after running the repairs. That was quite some time ago, and I no longer use that browser anymore.

Windows Repair can fix a lot of problems, and I can safely say the chance of it breaking anything is close to zero. Not only that, Shane spends a lot of time improving it to make it even better.

    Earth .... occasionally
Where are you getting THAT from ?

    @The Red Moon
    @Krusty13

A big Yes to what you wrote .... Bang-on correct !

Shane does excellent work and has my utmost respect .
It looks to me like a " labor of love " , his tools are free to home users , plus he runs a very useful and user friendly forum for Tweaking.
Not only do you get quick and efficient user support ..... you get THAT free as well !!!

These are powerful tools , offered free of charge and without warranty .... so act accordingly.
A chainsaw is also a powerful tool.
If you ignore the instructions and safety warnings and cut your leg off , whose fault is that ?
And if you didn't create a restore point ( and a registry backup ) before use .... why not ?

In reply to the negative posts ..... here is a quick tutorial I wrote for the " Hard-of-Thinking " :-

Step 1 - read the instructions
Step 2 - read the instructions again
Step 3 - read the instructions and follow them exactly

Would you blame the manufacturer of a toaster because you chose to use it in the bath ..... and got electrocuted ?

@quietman I agree, up to a point. But, I will add that if you just run the default repairs, Windows Repair is safe to use, and it is extremely likely anything would go wrong. If it does, then the problems could easily be fixed with System Restore or by restoring the registry backup that WR makes before doing repairs.

You don't need to know eactly what it is doing, as there is no user input required. So, it's not like the user has to make choices on what is being fixed or removed, and the wrong choices could cause problems. All you have to do is click on Start Repairs, and then WR will do it's job.

I can't imagine a situation where a reinstall of Windows would be required.
