Maybe I am crazy, but I would love to have Outlook Express back (on Win 7). Maybe Windows Live Mail comes close to it. So I am starting this thread to look for advice from those with experience and knowledge about Windows Live Mail.
Can you get it without the other things from Windows Essentials?
Can you just have it like Outlook Express without any other "live" things (whatever that maybe)?

PS: My system: Win 7 Pro 64-bit.

You download the file, wlsetup-web.exe, which is the downloader and installer for the Windows Essentials suite. When you run the file, it will give you the option to select which components you want to install, giving you the option to only install Windows Live Mail.

I installed WLM on several elderly relatives computers who had been using Outlook Express until we upgraded their computer. I needed to find a mail program that they could adapt from Outlook Express because they weren't interested in learning something new. They all were able to learn to use WLM after a short time with basically no problems. I tried to configure WLM to look as close to Outlook Express as I could and they seemed to be happy with it.

FanJ, I misspoke! I meant Windows Live Mail. Several years ago I built a PC and installed W7 and had to use WLM and was perfectly satisfied with it. It is WLM that some claim have made it function in W10.

    Hi Cloudcroft,

    Thank you !!

I have that file wlsetup-web.exe. It is very, very nice to hear that during the install you can select which components you actually want!

I hope that I remember my own old settings of Outlook Express.

I admit that I more and more belong to the elderly people ...

Time to make a backup image and go from there to see what WLM brings me.

    Dear Cloudcroft,
Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!

I personally prefer Windows Live Mail. Lot of women seems to prefer bells and whistles that Incredimail has to offer. This program I don't believe, have been updated since 2012.

When I was on Windows XP, Outlook Express was fine. Windows Live Mail was better. Used WLM also on Windows Vista, 7, and now I'm using it with Windows 10 and running perfectly fine for me.

I'm use to the the Outlook Express reading style pane. With WLM, I use the same still. ' Reading pane > bottom of the message list ' found by visiting ' View ' in the file menu.

There is a bug with the latest that can occur under certain circumstances. Regarding group emailing, and not emailing everyone in the group. There's a workaround, but if you don't use group emailing, not to worry as everything else is fine. ;)

    Hi Cloudcroft, Phant0m, roger_m,
    Thank you !

For now I have decided not to go with WLM (maybe later I change my mind).
Among other reasons I do not want Live ID, whatever it may be called and whatever it may be doing.
Maybe I may try Outlook 2010. I have two licences for it, although I tried one of them very quickly in the past and I don't know whether MS allows me that particular licence to use again on this computer. And if I can avoid to use Live ID (or whatever it maybe called).

FanJ, I don't think you have to have a Live ID to use Windows Live Mail, or at least you didn't have to the last time I installed WLM on a someone's computer. There is (or was) a feature in WLM that uploaded photos to the cloud to enable sending the photo through email. My wife was trying to attach an email, and this feature took over, asking her to sign in with a Live ID password. I finally figured out to stop this "feature", and enable simply attaching the photo to the email. She has never had a problem with this since. No other need for a Live ID as far as I can see.
