How vulnerable are built-in laptop webcams to hacks who's intent is to spy?

Is it smart to cover them or is that just being paranoid?!

My laptop has a light next to it which illuminates whenever the camera is rolling. Could a hacker disable the light allowing them to watch or record without being detected?

Perhaps I'm paranoid too but I have black electrical tape covering the cameras on my laptops.

I have a small piece of paper over my laptop cam. When I skype I take it off and put it back. Paranoid? Maybe. Simple and effective? you bet

Well then cover it I shall.
I'm just surprised they don't come with a removable cover of some kind since they can be hacked?!... Tape will do

You can possibly go into Device Manager and disable it their too, but I haven't bothered.
