openSUSE clearly states that it is supposed to be "free" as in freedom, thus you normally won't find non-Free packages right away, needing external repositories for some of them. You're lucky you got VLC to normally play media. I tried too, but for some reason the video would open in a whole new window, so I had to VLC windows. I couldn't get HD video to play on Youtube or any other site. Even though I don't have Flash installed, HD videos should work since I installed all necessary codecs. I also had problems with shutting down, locking, resuming, etc. But it's a new distro, I don't blame them for not getting it right yet.

Tried OpenSuse last year and it didn't install correctly maybe it was missing drivers. Quickly moved on.
I did not try myself but it seems resolved, I have heard about a major codecs and vlc update about one week ago.
Thanks. I'm using it right now and everything seems OK. I can play 1080p videos on YouTube, have K3B and VLC codecs, and everything. Problems seem to be resolved I'll record an HD video file to see if the old bugs are still present on VLC's playback. Now, I'm seeing a terrible bug. I installed KDE and MATE, and upon logging into MATE I only get a black screen and I have to reboot the machine. I'll check on their forums to see what's happening. I did not try MATE, but XFCE sucked...Gnome3 worked great. Not tried KDE because I do not like it, but some told me it's the best DE for Suse. Happy to hear that you like openSUSE, I like it too...still I prefer Fedora, though. I tried to use openSUSE in my second and third machine (which are basically just 2 external HDDs where I boot from on other computers) but still with some problems, while Fedora have got no issues at all. PS: one of those 2 HDD runs MintXFCE17.3 from an ISO downloaded a couple of weeks ago...I think I might wipe it.
I found my MATE problem. I'm used to block a ton of packages, and one of them is libgoa. Libgoa is a dependency if gvfs, which is a dependency of MATE So now everything is fine, I'm using openSUSE with MATE and KDE5, and everything is working beautifully. All I have to do now is create a dummy package for libgoa. I'm really happy with the results and I'm recommending openSUSE 42.1 to everybody.
I'm back to heaven now (Arch Linux). Games don't fulfill me anymore, so Windows is pretty much useless.
Of the various types that I tried in the past, suse was my favorite and the one that I used for a couple months before going back to windows - all others I went back to windows after a day or two. I've tried in the past mandrake, ubuntu, kubuntu, mepis, debian, pclinuxos, mint, I tried bsd for awhile too. Some of this is going back ten years so I imagine things have improved
I tried OpenSUSE with KDE Plasma 5 (I think it was 5), and it looked beautiful, seemed good, until I ran the updater and installed all the updates that follow a clean install. On reboot, the entire UI and system was hosed/trashed. I got a similar result on Kubuntu 15.10 with Plasma. Something about Plasma and my machine just don't seem to get along. Shame, cause it looks beautiful.
OpenSUSE now has two releases going forward: Leap 42.1 which is based on SUSE Enterprise 12, is a stable distribution - its packages will be updated but the base system will update only when SUSE Enterprise updates its system. Think of it as the LTS of OpenSUSE - good for 6 years support. Tumbleweed which is based on Factory, is a rolling distribution - packages and base system will be updated as new packages and base system updates come in. Its more on the bleeding edge and you always stay current. What OpenSUSE to select depends on how you like to set it up and how often you want to update it.
