In the case I wanted to restore and image remotely (remote desktop), does IFW allow me to do so? Cause afaik when doing a backup some files are locked and IFW suggest to use IFD or IFL instead, but IFD or IFL are utilized "outside" Windows.
If so, how to deal with UEFI and GPT disks and UEFI-CSM (Legacy) and MBR partition style?

    Mister X,

I just tried creating an IFW entire drive image of a remote computer's SSD using TeamViewer. No problems. The remote computer was a UEFI system.

Several years ago I was interested in imaging and restoring remote computers over the network. I checked my notes and for restores I was using psexec.exe and IFL bootfile. The remote computer would restart into IFL and the restore would run.

To create an IFW image on a remote computer without using TeamViewer...

The host computer contains psexec_lines.cmd and sched.cmd

    psexec_lines.cmd is...

    .
    .
    .

    sched.cmd is..

In the remote computer create a Scheduled Task called psexectest
Run with Highest privileges etc and have it pointing to your IFW batch file (for the backup)

In the remote computer add this registry item:

    Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
    Name: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 1

Run psexec_lines.cmd and the IFW backup will happen.

    Hi
may i ask a question about image for linux (it includes veracrypt now ,in the past true crypt ) and an encrypted disk
    i read it about https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=462
it's the only image software that can do it!

it feature is not present in image for windows while i'm creating a rescue cd?

    thanks

Not sure if you're asking about the IFL GUI boot media or the IFW boot media.

and can i ask a question ? does somebody test backup and restore encrypted disks , volumes ? is it reliable ?
encrypt windows 10 ,or 8 or windows 7 , create a backup using image for linux like the link above

    thanks

The IFW boot media doesn't support imaging TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt partitions in the decrypted state like you can with the IFL GUI media.

When I tested the IFL GUI method before, it all worked fine. I haven't tested it recently, but I don't think anything major has changed with VeraCrypt and TrueCrypt hasn't changed for quite some time. You do need to have a good grasp of how it all works because it's easy to render the encrypted disk/partition(s) inaccessible if something goes wrong. What works and what you need to do is in the KB article you linked.

Keep in mind that if you have a backup that's in the decrypted state then you're pretty safe since you can always re-encrypt it after restoring. Backing up disks in the encrypted state is a lot more risky in addition to taking up a lot more time and space. Generally not worth it, in my opinion.

    Thanks MudCrab

in case of encrypted OS , the best way is to make a 1:1 copy ,is not it ?
    thanks

What is "best" really depends on each user's scenario. My point of view is that due to how easy it is to make a TrueCrypt disk/partition inaccessible that it's best to create backups of the decrypted data. Backups of this type can be restored normally and can then be re-encrypted as desired.

Is there a particular scenario you're concerned about?

Agreed. I use Bitlocker to do FDE of my OS drive after making backup of the unencrypted drive using Acronis and IFW. Backup of an already encrypted drive is dangerous and waste of disk space to store the disk image.

The wrong partition is Active. Use IFL Work with Partitions to set the 500 MB partition Active. (Which partition is Active on the Win10 128 GB SSD?)

Disconnect all drives from the motherboard. Plug the new 250 GB SSD into SATA port 1. Now try to boot the OS.
