    Help.

I seek an AV that runs on XP. I want it to run on-demand only (right-click usage) - to be used as a 2nd opinion.

(Yes, I am cognizantly cognizant of the factual fact that I could use Hitman for this porpoise, but me no likee dot ting....)

Just let me know what might *easily* run on-demand only. Please avoid qualitative comparisons or the Mods might succumb to a state of jawful tightfulness.

    Zemana anti Malware or Malwarebytes.

I have all 3 (HMP) popping up once in 24hrs to do a scheduled scan then exiting.
    No Realtime AV for me

Don't know if this is what you're looking for but you can use Virustotal Uploader to quickly check files on their online service with multiple AV scanners.

Aloha bellgamin, another XP stalwart (and islander) here. I use and recommend MBAM-Free for on-demand 2nd opinion (+ other cleanup). Some here will say MBAM is not an AV, nevertheless it has corroborated every virus that my real-time AV (BD-Free) has blocked over the past few years (in addition, it has identified and removed adware and pup's that had evaded BD-Free).

Holy bejesus! Never knew there were so many. I have the top 3 listed :) Thanks.

I have a question about Zemana & herdProtect. Do the installables of these have rt click context menu? And do they really not conflict with AVs & IS? I have BDIS installed & it would be prudent to use their portable versions unless the installed versions have rt click context menu.

@zapjb You can do context menu scans with Zemana AntiMalware, but not herdProtect. They won't conflict with other security software.

@Roger_m Will context menu scans be present with portable Zemana or only installed?

@zapjb I presume only when installed. I don't use portable software, so have only used the installed version.

I liked 2 of them. Downloaded. Will test them on Shadow Defender tomorrow. BTGLW.

By the way..... My *1st Opinion* AV is Avast. It runs only on-demand -- easy to set it that way - simply uncheck its real-time shields.

10 Q to all commenters. I am very grateful for your help!

    Sysinternal's Three Must-VT-eers
    - autoruns checks signatures + malware check at VT of AUTORUN entries
    - process explorer checks signatures + malware check at VT of RUNNING processes (when you look at DLL's in VIEW LOWER PANEL, it will also check all DLL's)
    - sigcheck also checks signatures and malware check at VT for executables with unknown or invalid signature, here is the command line

    "C:\[Installation directory of sigcheck]\sigcheck.exe" -e -s -u -vr -vt "X:\directory to check"

Heh, heh... @Windows_Security security always recommends the most labor-intensive option... LOL.

    Just kidding.

I often run Comodo Cleaning Essentials (Killswitch and Autoruns) to check the status of running stuff.

@RejZoR I decided to run CCE today, but didn't let the scan complete as it was using over 1.2GB of RAM.

Just use Killswitch from the program suite and tick "Show only untrusted processes". Do the same for their Autoruns. It's a good checkup of what's running on your system.

    @RejZoR Thanks, I'll try that.

  21. There is truth in your joke. What I don't understand is why Microsoft only makes these power tools available to power users. Why not provide sigcheck with right click context menu option? My approach is "use what is available (in the OS)" no idea why M$ makes this so labour intensive.

@Windows_Security - I follow your posts with keen interest. However, using built-in Windows security to the max - or creating SRPs - is just, to me, a massive undertaking. Anyone that uses Windows quickly learns that it ain't user friendly.

Before you even start, you have to know what to do. If you don't know what to do, then you have to perform a lot of research to discover what you need to do.

Me, I just opt for AppGuard. Guess I'm just lazy.

Maybe I will get around to it eventually...

When Eirik (product manager of AppGuard) was on Wilders Security, he organized feedback sessions with their lead developer. So AppGuard is IMO the best security program you can buy (on the equation useability seamless protection).

    AppGuard is great protection.

However, the user interface needs improvement to make for easier configuration.

Other than that, there are a few bugs.

AppGuard development is very... very slow to fix things and make any meaningful improvements - for whatever reason(s).

OP should look into AppGuard, then he will have greatly diminished need for AV... nothing but Emsisoft Emergency Kit - or something along that line.

Emsisoft Emergency Kit or Emsisoft anti-malware free simply. I used it since it was A-Squared - it has Ikarus at that time - and I always found it the best choice for a second, on demand scan.
