Hello, I have always used Chrome Portable instead of Chrome but I have it on the hard drive itself so not running off USB and the reason I used CP instead was of all the activity of Chrome/Google updater/installer in regular Chrome as my outbound firewall would prompt frequently for it. But recently on an older PC I tried regular Chrome installed again and it is getting a significantly higher Octane score than CP on that same computer. Is that typical with Chrome being faster? And is the Octane benchmark a reliable indicator of browsing speed? Also, is there nothing to be concerned about with the Google/Chrome updater in terms of sending back private information? Because I would like the speed benefits if possible. Thanks.
Not if Chrome portable was installed on a RAM disk... But seriously, "private" information is completely subjective, and you should explain what you're comfortable with. More details: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/browser/privacy/
Well I don't care if the updater/installer is just checking for updates to Chrome but I was not sure if that is the mechanism used to send back other information and if so what that other information would be. Plus I forgot to mention the other reason I hate full installs in general is that removing something always seems to leave traces and I thought uninstalling Chrome is especially bad and hard to do but I am not sure about that. One other question: is it possible to install extensions from Chrome Store using CP? I did not think so but not sure. How much ram would be needed to create Ram disk for something like chrome portable? Thanks again.
I find Chrome Portable to be significantly faster than regular Chrome. Secondly, I really like that the default with Chrome Portable is to delete the cache and temporary internet files upon exit. When I used to use regular Chrome, I was amazed at how large the cache got; several hundred MB's! Lastly, with Chrome Portable I use all the same extensions that I used with regular or installed Chrome. Right now I am using LastPass, Evernote, Adblock, and WOT and they all work fine on Chrome Portable.
Did you install those extensions to CP from the Chrome store in the same way as when using installed Chrome? As I seem to get message that my cp is not compatible but I wonder now if that is because it is an outdated version. And is there a way to update CP or for portable's do you have download the latest version again? Thanks.
I wouldn't know the details of what they collect, but Chrome install does keep a lot of things on your computer. Standard uninstalling does remove most of it from what I remember, at least when it works properly. How much RAM do you need for RAM disk? Well I recommend at least 1 GB for Chrome Portable and 4 GB for your system. So 6-8 GB overall would be the recommended minimum for me.
I use the following url for portable Chrome. In fact, I download most of my portable apps from this same site: http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable I installed the extensions from within Chrome, going to "More Tools", then "Extensions", then click on the link "get more extensions". I've never had an issue installing extensions from within portable Chrome.
Thanks Alex for your help with this as I tried the latest version of CP and it worked exactly as you said and I do have extensions now installed. Another huge plus is the latest version is way faster than what I was using as my Octane scores with it have gone way up.
hi i haven't noticed any differences the only difference is that chrome portable is updated always late the actual version is 48.0.2564.103 , while the portable is still 48.0.2564.97 -> http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable maybe the portable launcher could be used seeing it download chrome during the installation of the portable version
