Having glitzy new buildings is all nice and everything. But their product is not really stable.searching their forum reveals a huge amount of issues plus the avast forum is full of the usual fanboy nonsense so conclusive solutions to long running issues are never fully taken on board.Quite sad really as up to version 5 it was a top antivirus but subsequent releases have disclosed a tendency to infest the program with in your face adware and it makes the software an annoyance.

Still don't understand why this would be, is it because joe public seems to like a 'freebie' or simply uneducated on internet security :doubt:

A "gala event" is unlikely to make Avast a better AV. Yes, it used to be great, but the good ol' days seem to be gone. They should not just move headquarters; they should also move back to the days when Avast was a top-notch AV.

They have all the potential they never seem to utilize for whatever reason.

Since the last major upgrade I haven't seen any nag screens whatsoever. Knowing my luck, one will pop up just after I've typed this!

Nah, not factual> Firstly, having used Avast for 15 years I can say 'my experience' with the Anti Virus components (Shields) has been completely STABLE.
The fact is, some of the added "TOOLS" or modules if you like, have been troublesome and I agree should have or should have had more time spent fixing bugs and fine tuning; then releasing an effective, trouble free component.
Fortunately, Avast is one of the few Internet Security Software products that when installed using the CUSTOM INSTALL option, offers the user the choice to install or NOT INSTALL any or all of the components offered in the TOOLS column or Shields column for that matter.
With the paid for versions, popups are controlled by settings and the option to uninstall any unwanted component through the "Change" function within the programs installation options.

Secondly, the forum imho has nothing to do with the Marketing of Avast. I have/do participate on many security forums and have for many years and imho the Avast forum is one of the REAL community security forums in existence. Like any gathering of individuals, there is always going to be negative and uncomfortable users and helpers not unlike on any forum.
Fanboys and girls I might add are those users who have been using avast for years and have run into almost all problems or bugs offered up by the development of this security software and can offer real time help from personal experience. That's it.
BTW, I have never been infected with malware since/while having Avast installed on any of my OS's.

It is hard to reconcile the claim:

"Protecting over 230 million PCs, Macs, & Mobiles - more than any other antivirus"

with the fact that other AV vendors boast of much higher numbers: Kaspersky claims more
than 400,000,000 and Bitdefender claims more than 500,000,000 for example.

So who's lying? I suspect that this boast may be based on some OPSWAT reports that have
shown Avast with the lead in market share. See this Avast blog for example:

"Good guys finish first: Avast is the leading security company worldwide"
    https://blog.avast.com/2015/02/04/g...st-is-the-leading-security-company-worldwide/

However, those figures are culled from a user base where OPSWAT Gears is installed. As
    OPSWAT's own disclaimer points out:

"Please note that OPSWAT is not a research institution and makes no claims on the accuracy
of this data in the real world marketplace."

Note also that the OPSWAT reports often show Avast Free at the top, with Avast paid-for much
lower in the rankings. As the data collection is done via installations of Gears *free*
there is likely a bias among that user base toward free AV/AM products.

Avast Free is a beautifully light, simple and practical AV if you uncheck virtually all of the bundled module options.

Would this time be around 2006-2008? Because I gotta tell ya, I literally fell in love with Avast back then, and I still love them. The interface, the woman's voice, the forums, the sales, the ability to customize the program..... everything about them makes my eyes shine a little bit and my heart to skip a beat.

However, I tried it last year and something bad happened: my games woud stutter if I downloaded something on the background. I was playing Race07 and was also downloading other Steam games at the same time, and I had configured Avast to scan all files and everything. Avast never felt so heavy in these 10 years that I used it. Maybe the source of this problem was that it was a beta version? I don't know. Kaspersky, Avira, COMODO, none feel this heavy and make my games stutter, even when all scanning capabilities are enabled. I mean, I was just downloading my games at 1.4 MB/s o_O No AV should slow my machine that badly.

If I had the money and was using Windows, I wouldn't think twice before buying their Internet Security suite. I love to use it with COMODO, Malwarebytes and Avira (yes, all together :p - never had problems).

Yes, AVAST was a top-notch AV at that time. If they removed all the clutter, junk and bloat from their AV, it could soon be as great as it was back then. If you uncheck the bundled module options, as Daveski17 suggested above, AVAST is not that bad, but they can do better.

I still like their product but like you stated, it doesn't run fast as it once did....at my age, time is critical! LOL

This seems to be a general problem in the AV sector, most of them are bloated as hell, and who knows what kind of data is being transfered to all of these AV companies. About the new buildings, they look cool, it also makes me wonder just how financially healthy these companies are. Seems they are making lots of cash.

Surely, being financially healthy is a good indicator for an AV company.

I've probably installed and removed avast! more than anyone ever and I've never had a problem with a dead OS because of it. Ranging from Windows XP and upwards. There must be something else behind it.

Avast leaves a lot behind in the registry after a uninstall. Even if you don't install Grimefighter it leaves it remnants in registry and you cant delete them.

F-Secure , McAfee and Avast are the 3 worst at leaving locked garbage in your registry.

Did you run the uninstall tool? I've only had problems running Avast! on Vista, but it uninstalled cleanly.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. avast is certainly not the worst offender. So it leaves few reg entries behind, big deal. They are harmless. What you should worry about are system hooks that remain on system even after uninstallations.

Besides, you can use avast! Uninstall Utility to remove most remaining things.
