These two phrases are contradictory. For education purposes but without a possibility to recover your files??
Yes he thought that he could recover files by logging into C&C servers and getting keys (he planted backdoor access). The problem is that C&C server was shut down and all data was probably deleted. That's why files can't be recovered. I guess he just didn't think it through.
Similar to forgetting you locked the door from the inside. Then you went outside, the door slammed shut, and you don't have your keys with you. Moral of the story is always have a spare key hidden outside for these instances. Another analogy that comes to mind is "If you play with fire, you will eventually get burnt."
