This is the first time I have seen this on filehippo - an auto play video for toothpaste (same as the TV ad) as soon as I selected download. The download would not finish until the ad finished. 6MB grew to 30MB, took way too long to finish and there was no stop or close on the video. I was updating CCleaner on my brother's PC. He uses IE11. Piriform redirects to filehippo for the download. After that I turned on Active-X filter in IE, hopefully giving my brother a little more control over these type of ads in the future. There are no extensions in IE, so I assume this was the way to go. I use Chrome not IE and have the 'content setting' ticked for me to chose when to run plugin content. I have never seen this with CCleaner updates routed through filehippo using Chrome. I do not know how to do it in FF or other browsers, but maybe someone else can provide the solution for those who would like to know. Extension possibly?
If you go directly to piriform.com to download CCleaner you can choose to download directly from them. If you use the Update system, or Check for updates, in CCleaner you will be redirectly. If I see an update is available I go to their site manually.
Hi emmjay, with Firefox, I don't get the video at File hippo to download CCleaner. At first, I downloaded CCleaner with my regular Firefox with NoScript and Adblock plus, and even after disabling the addons, the video never ran. I wanted to see what happens using a new Firefox profile. So, I created a new Firefox profile and did not add any addons or changed any setting, and CCleaner downloaded without forcing me to view any video. Firefox.... Bo
Try an ad block extension and maybe block 3rd party cookies as well. Odd the plugin consent option you've enabled didn't block the video. Using Chromium here with that same option enabled and it works as intended.
Just to clarify, I only had this problem on my brother's PC (using IE11). Also, I was just pointing out that the Chrome settings on my laptop worked - I do not get the auto play video ad at all. I guess I did not articulate that very well. @bo elam. Thanks Bo for doing those tests. I did not try the download from FF, I was just wondering if anybody else had.
This article I found today states that Google stops auto play ads embedded in websites by default. The article only references Chrome, but as Bo's tests have revealed - FF seems to do the same. http://arstechnica.com/information-...lock-auto-playing-flash-ads-from-september-1/ It appears that it is only IE that does not block these videos. I searched around for solutions, but only came across pages upon pages referencing how to stop auto play video ads in Facebook. Maybe Edge plays the videos by default too - I do not know.
