Mods: If you think the poll should be a separate entry, let me know. As simple as that. This is Dedoimedo's readers poll on the best Linux distribution of 2015. Vote now or forever hold your chroot. Or something. http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/best-distro-2015-vote.html Cheers, Mrk
I voted Linux Mint, since thats what I use, have been using it since 17.0, from next year no more Windows for me as I will be erasing Windows from my drive, currently dual booting but next year when Linux Mint 18 comes out I will only have Linux Mint installed, commited to Linux from here on
Voted Debian (Stable). Most of the people is going to vote what they already use. It is more like a who use what distro pool.
At this point, I've been using Mint and Ubuntu and played a bit with pure Debian on a Raspberry Pi. Hard to vote at this point. I've put both Mint and Ubuntu on both newer and older laptops and I like Ubuntu's unity GUI which I find really slick and well designed but I don't like the commercialism of Ubuntu. Paid apps for Linux? Blech. I find Mint to be more stable and pragmatic. Kind of like the difference between the cuter girl you'd like to date and the less attractive one you really can get along with long term. I still need to try Arch and Fedora at a bare minumum before I could realistically vote on this.
Me too. It doesn't have a good Firmware for my R9 270X, so instead I use Arch with the packages 'your-freedom' and 'your-privacy' from Parabola's repo. So the only thing non-Free is the Firmware, which in itself runs on the host device and not on the host CPU/Kernel. So I'm OK with it.
Nope. Firmware runs on the host device, in this case on my GPU. The Kernel copies the Firmware to the device and it runs there.
Yes. But the good side of it is that Kernel doesn't copy the Microcode to a device that isn't present. So IMO the only problem in running blobs is if you're using them on a network card, because who knows what the card will be doing. It shouldn't be so easy to hide a backdoor on a Firmware, but it's best to be safe than sorry EDIT: Just noticed we deviated a lot from OP. Sorry!
I voted for Qubes OS, because it is an innovative OS that is constantly improving. Version 3.1 rc1 has just been released a few days ago. I have learned a lot since I first discovered Qubes and since then a lot has happened. I feel that it has become much more accessible now. https://www.qubes-os.org/ My main system is still Parabola so I can understand why a lot of people voted for Arch.
I haven't tried them all so for me it's impossible to say what's, in my opinion and for my needs, the best. I really like Linux Mint, and recently i briefly tried Linux Lite from a USB and liked it too (a review from Mrkvonic would be cool). Ps: I would love to find distros with almost no software pre-installed (like bodhi Linux, that only brings a browser and a notepad, and i can choose what other apps i want to install).
I hadn't thought about Qubes but after reading the link, it is definitely on the next to try list. I just got the ideal laptop for it a couple of weeks ago.
My basic platform is Ubuntu but with a Cinnamon PPA mixed in to give me what I desire. Loyal to the core for Ubuntu...as always. Been running it since 2005 (with a little distro-hopping here and there just for a change of pace). Later... Bob
