Looking out for a family friend who needs a firewall..has to be free and run on windows xp pro or home? thank you for any and all advise
COMODO still works on XP: https://personalfirewall.comodo.com...key5sk4=5547&key5sk5=1449644653000&key7sk1=90
There's a free version of Outpost FW? I know there's a free Security Suite, which is v.7.1.1 but I didn't know there was a free FW too. I don't see it on their website. Edit: found it on Filehippo...
Individuals, using the Windows XP Operating System, have their personal reasons for doing so. In my opinion it doesn't do anyone any good advising them to upgrade to a new Operating System. The price of a new Operating System is minimal when considering the price of hardware that will not function properly if at all with a new system. Additionally, the price to replace software that will not function with new Operating Systems, can quickly add up. So please if those of you who quickly suggest update to a new Operating System would refrain from expressing your opinion I am sure it would be appreciated. I am sure that Windows XP can be secure with common sense and good security software. Just my personal opinion. John
It is safe to say that there are multiple vulnerabilities in XP that were not patched by Microsoft prior to XP's end of service support date. So anyone still using XP can be infected through one of those vulnerabilities. If it's a kernel vulnerability, it is doubtful any anti-exploit software will protect you; if it still supports XP.
If anyone wishes to purchase a new laptop/pc for me and send it my way please please do so...pm me and I will give you my home address!!
You may need to check if privatefirewall is still being actively maintained. Outpost free would probably be a good starting point or comodo.
But version 8 still works And since XP won't receive updates, I wouldn't call outdated COMODO a problem too However, anyone can still receive updates from Microsoft for XP, just turn your XP into an "embed" device, via regedit. I don't know the legality of this, though, so do some research beforehand.
I think Kerio 2.1.5 Free with Seconfig XP would be good and light...such combo is working on my XP. http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page7.html#Kerio Personal Firewall https://seconfig.sytes.net/
I seriously doubt that it matters. The firewall works as it is now and being a firewall it doesn't need regular updates. So unless there is a "show stopper" type of bug, it is OK to use it. I think it does, but I never saw the need to move past 5.12
The best incoming firewall might likely be the one on your router BUT be sure to change Router's password to a new one with at least 15-20 characters. For XP the best outgoing firewall, IMHO, is PrivateFW. As to XP's lack of Microsoft support -- with my Computer's security based mainly on detect & restore, I don't need no stinkin M$. Got nasties? Load a clean image & POOF! no more nasties.
True! Not to go too far OT, I will limit myself to listing just two of several excellent detectors for XP. These two examples are file integrity checkers: Tiny Word ADinf These should be used daily - otherwise the file & registry changes may overwhelm you. BACK ONTO THE THREAD TOPIC: note that the recommended firewall (Private FW) includes capabilities to detect abnormalities in process characteristics/usage AND abnormalities in email traffic volume/type -- VERY powerful detection tools!
