AVG is a bit secretive about it, but here are all the changes: http://now.avg.com/new-protection-and-performance-features/ It seems most of the stuff is under the hood, around the scan engine and on the outside it's the AVG Zen interface which is not as intrusive as some launchers like the one for AVIRA. www.avg.com
Wow. 10 years or so ago this was probably the most popular free AV available. Now they release a new version, and no one seems to notice. I'll probably check it out tomorrow.
I've tried it yesterday and uninstalled it just as quickly. Guess why. Dreaded FP's. Why is avast! the only bloody AV that doesn't give me FP's on freaking everything and I haven't specifically reported any FP's so that detection would be in any way specifically tailored for my system. Yet in tests, avast! somehow gets 80+ FP's and others like just few or even none. Makes no sense. As for the AV itself, GUI is slightly changed and they've added AVG Zen. Feature wise, it's exactly the same as all AVG versions for the last few years. It seems like they aren't even trying anymore...
I tried this a week ago, and found soon uninstalled it. There doesn't seem to be much changed from the 2015 releases. But, at least it still remains very light.
I ditched AVG 2015 a few days ago after many years of using AVG products. I was not pleased to read the recent statement from their CEO about customer data policies , but that wasn't the only reason .... and perhaps he was simply being more honest than others in the AV business. I'm now using Avira but I'm not impressed with it's effect on boot times ( same as most users apparently ! ). Maybe I'll give AVG 2016 a try at a later date , but I have to say I wonder if any AVs are actually doing anything useful these days !
I like it with avast! that they now give you option to opt out of data sharing. You can still participate int heir cloud, but you can decide not to allow them to share your data beyond their company (to 3rd parties).
Here is a very interesting bit of info about AVG. http://forums.theregister.co.uk/forum/1/2015/09/21/avg_freemium_browsing_history_slurp/ I'll leave it up to you all as the whether you wish to continue using this product. Always, Wildman
Remember 7.5 I used to love that thing , how the update used to fly down so light! ....... Avg should do it again make a light version!! imagine how popular it would be, I mean really there is not need for all these big bloatware AVS! I might try 2016 Vs Antivir see if its better than 2015
A big issue which still remains with the 2016 version is that it does not install cleanly. Even AVG's removal tool leaves drivers behind.
AVG climbs the AV-Comparatives antivirus ratings http://www.softwarecrew.com/2015/11/avg-climbs-the-av-comparatives-antivirus-ratings/
I found the opposite, it is actually quite light on my system. I have never had any issue with its protection either. That being said, it is what it is - an average product, but being average on AV-C means you are pretty good to begin with.
Maybe i didn't give it enough time, it was running a first scan and i open my browser and it took ages to load a webpage and other stuff.... never felt this impact with another AV
There is also a very positive review of AVG Free on PCmag.com http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2471768,00.asp I've had a very low opinion of AVG based on what I felt were very poor products in the past, but after seeing the AV-Comparatives results and the PCmag review I decided to try it. So far it's running well on Windows 10 - no slowdowns and no conflicts with my other security apps.
Is there no more a X64 bit version ? every time i tried even with different installers it always wants to install in Program files/ X86
Good question. I also installed the 32 bit, but now I see this on filehippo http://filehippo.com/download_avg_antivirus_64/
I have tried this one on filehippo, it also wants to install in x86 It seems there is no more x64 bit, all installers are 32bit but supporting 64 installations goes to x86 folder
Hated it. The 'Zen' rubbish is pointless and the AV itself caused my system to hang at boot. I used it for a year or so when I needed something for free and didn't have the time to look properly for an alternative, but now it's gone and to be honest - good riddance.
The thing to look at after using a 64 bit installer is the status of the running processes in the task manager; are they 32 bit or 64 bit?
I understand, but I'm not sure the folder location is a completely reliable indicator. The important thing is whether or not the resulting executables are 64 bit. If they are then you may be able to change the location to C:\program files during a custom install.
