For a project that has been dragging on much longer than anticipated I installed IfW 2.91 last year on a server, mainly to do some quick backups as the project developed. In a few weeks time we want to move this server from the testing phase to full production and at that stage I would prefer a formal backup policy to be in place. While I have used Ifw on some pc from time to time, usually only doing simple operations, so I am not as familiar as I should be. I looked through the settings and the pdf guide but could not find anything on retention. I suppose you can tell Ifw how many backups to keep? Where would I find this setting? Also, I note the latest version is 2.97e - is there anything particular I would need to keep in mind when updating my version?
Hi beethoven, IFW does not have built in retention settings but terabyte unlimited provides some batch scripts that have retention policies. In Simple Operations mode the default is to create six incremental backups in each chain. You can change this by using the /mi option for command line operations or MaxIncrementals in the INI file. Some of the installer options may be different. Basically, should just be a normal update (will probably need to reboot).
thanks guys - I will need to study this and experiment. I have no experience whatsoever with batch files, so while a first glance at the instructions and cmd file make it seem easy enough, I also fear it's easy to make mistakes (for someone like me ) @ mudcrab - while I only did full backups so far - I don't think I used/ticked simple operations (sorry I used the terminology but mistake) , though I don't remember why. Will have to look at the server next week to check and test it if I get a chance.
You're welcome. For avoiding mistakes Perform a manual backup of the partition/s that you want to backup... deselect simple operations (if you used those) select full backup proceed to the steps of what to backup and where and at the last step with "Backup options" click on "Show Command", check "save to file" and press OK... IFW will display the command line with your settings for that backup and you'll use that as a guide of what you want to use in the batches. Panagiotis
