A friend of mine installed Roboscan Fee edition about a week ago. I told him that the site and program hasn't been updated since 2013 (one site says 2014) the homepage states 2013. But he says that the virus definitions are still updating (Tera engine and Bitdefender engine). Is he safe using a program that hasn't been updated for so long, but the virus defs are still being updated ?
Have your friend locate the bdcore.dll file and right click for Properties and check for the version under the Details tab. It should be 11.0.1.12. If not, it's not necessarily obsolete, just not as good. Have him/her locate the update.txt file, open it and check it against: http://download.bitdefender.com/updates/bitdefender_v9/plugins/update.txt If his/her Version: is more than a 3-4 points behind, then zero-day detection will suffer greatly. BD updates these with great regularity, about a half a dozen times a day, often quite a few more depending on the threat landscape. Even when Roboscan was at it's "peak hype" era a couple-three years back, I recall the bdcore version was 11.0.1.6 long after .12 was released. Roboscan's BD definitions server (in Korea) was consistently in arrears by days, quite often a week or more. Roboscan's report that files are updating or up-to-date is Bogus. Roboscan also runs BD's B-Have heuristic scan which is not as effective as it was. BD invented their Active Virus Control (AVC) a few years ago, which is not in Roboscan or any of the other "free Bitdefender engine" AVs that saturate teh webbunetz. Roboscan was unique in that it had a neat little personal firewall which might have relevance if Windows didn't have a good but not-so-personal firewall. Right now, IMHO the best "free Bitdefender engine" AV is Lavasoft's Ad-Aware Free+ (v11.8 just released) which should be installed skipping the Web Companion during install. And then make sure Safe Browsing is enabled in Firefox and Chrome and SmartScreen in IE. My next choice, Avira free. Otherwise, there's Bitdefender Free (which includes AVC and their network IDS), but not for Windows 10.

Redux... Those pretty chart detailing Ad-Aware's free BD SDK implementation against other BD enabled Internet $ecurity $uite$ and BDIS itself has great value for the noobs and posers alike. But not me. And it's obvious you completely missed every part of "free Bitdefender engine." Your attempt to pawn it off on one who can cite bdcore versions, AVC, IDS and the BD def update schema belies your high-post-count hubris. As well, to inject it into my legitimate and practiced discussion is not appreciated. I am, however, impressed by your skills at pasting links.

Not too much great news on any side of the fence. And I personally know that Bitdefender Free uses a lot of memory, and 360 Total Security Essentials drops an almost 1GB file on you.
I would like to know how many new malware are created each second around the world that AV's don't have defs or any other means of detecting?
That's one of the reasons why you should always check the box asking for you to send data that will help the security vendor in their battle against viruses and malware.
