is there a significant advantage to installing the very latest edition of a particular AV suite?
for example, does kaspersky 2016 give better protection than kaspersky 2015?
and ditto with bitdefender (I am assuming that 2016 will be out soon)
or is the level of protection essentially the same?

It's a security software. Keeping it as up to date as possible means it'll be capable of dealing with latest threats and will have the least vulnerabilities and flaws. It's just common sense.

For some programs like Kaspersky, better wait until nJanuary next year to change. Give them time to iron out the bugs unless you are on enterprise. Less bugs

yes, kaspersky 2016 really drove me crazy with the bugs.
on windows 10, even 2015 still has bugs.
    bitdefender hasn't given me trouble.

Old and new versions may use different engines,
but they are using the very same signatures.

This is a good question when the AV is predominantly cloud based like Panda. I recently upgraded (Panda Free) and haven't noticed any bugs yet, but, as you know, YMMV.

I agree. I let others be the "guinea pigs." After a month or two when all the horror stories have been posted and the bugs worked out, I then install.

I don't know yet. As I haven't tried it. Apparently missing quarantine files have been discovered in Lost and Found by some. Have you had problems?

    That depends.

Usually newer products use the same ENGINE and signatures/vaccines as older versions, which is what matters. A lot of times newer versions only bring a few new features and GUI.

I remember that Kaspersky bugs a lot, specially with newer versions. I'd wait a few months and then test it on a virtual machine first.
