What AV protection do tablets or similar hardware use? I don't think they use Windows for their OS.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

It depends. There are also tablets that use full blown Windows, like ASUS Transformer T100 or ACER Iconia W4 800 series. Bu most people don't go after these because they are quite more expensive.

I ended up purchasing a Kindle Fire HDX 7. It came with 6 mos of Titanium Internet Security. I am not sure if my KIS will work or if Android requires a special AV.

IMHO...if one is using the full version of Windows then just about any of the usual candidates will work...it just depends on one preferences. The only obvious criteria after completeness of protection is how 'light' the chosen app is, and on that criteria there are many IMHO who will find they need to move to something lighter than what they currently run on their non tablet-based system.

More importantly: what are the mechanisms of infection?

If "mechanisms of infection" = attack vectors, I assume they would be the same as any desktop / laptop.

For Android, the main mechanism of infection is choosing to install a dodgy app - and usually not from the google play store. I don't really worry about an AV on Android, and I'm sure we'll hear the moment the wisdom of that changes.

In terms of information security, then Android is bit of a nightmare since it's one of Google's main arms of information gathering on people - and 3rd party apps also generally want far more permissions than they need. Rooting it and using a custom ROM will shift the control of your information more towards you, but not completely AFAIK.

I am using Webroot complete in my dell venue android tablet for a year, pretty much satisfied. So far this seems to have the lightest battery footprint. I tried most of other AVs in play store, and liked Malwarebytes too, but it was too hard of my battery.
