From Microsoft re-re-releases KB 2952664, KB 2976978, and KB 2977759: There are reports in thread Windows Update scan high memory usage that KB3050265 does indeed work.
It reduced peak memory usage from 1.7 GB to 350 MB; a 5x reduction on my WIN 7 SP1, x64 build! I am very suspicious of the optional update for OS upgrades; i.e. WIN 10. Smells to me like MS just separated this from the former Win Updating processing. Installing it might just revert things to like they were previously? The other MS update is for steam memory issues.
Had not applied the May patches W7Px64 until today. There were 5 optional updates & all were about W10. Hid them all. Now IF they'll just stay hidden.
I removed 2952664 last night, planning to reinstall it, but it never showed up again. I understand it was optional before, maybe now it will magically re-appear? I was trying to get the 10 icon upgrade thing to appear, but it won't. So I thought reinstalling a few of the updates might help. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be.
I got this one as optional: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3050267 Also two others that are connected to "customer experience", which I have hide.
Thanks MrBrian, I hadn't seen that one yet. I did spend hours last night trying to figure out why it isn't working, looked thru all the pertinent event viewer logs including the gwx lot and so on, but no luck. Tried a batch file, and still no luck. I'll give this one a try. I don't even know that I want 10 or not, haven't really decided. If this simple upgrade notifier process doesn't even work, then that doesn't inspire much confidence in the entire upgrade process, or even in Win 10. At this point, I'm just trying to get the process working. But if I can't, then I'll probably just stick with 7.
Article Windows Update Client for Windows 7: June 2015 was updated on June 4. @Kerodo: You're welcome .
Thanks very much again MrBrian. I ran the batch file and option #1 worked. Now I've got the icon. All I need to do now is decide if I want 10 or not.
KB3058515 also contains non-security-related fixes. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3058515 for more details.
I got 17 updates but installed 16. There is no info about KB3056347 (even Google doesn't find anything) so I'll wait until we get more info. KMS was also updated so that Windows 10 could be activated using it.
