Thanks. Do you know if the new banking and payment protection is limited to the suite?

Good Morning! So...the New Version Ex: Smart Security 9... will contain the Banking and Payment Protection? I for one applaud Eset for finally making it available to their Customer base. I'll definitely keep checking in too hear how the Beta Testers Feedback aligns to the Effectiveness of the Banking Component. Excellent News...looking forward to the Beta Testers Impressions. Sincerely...Securon

They've enabled SSL scanning by default and installed their certificate in Trusted Root CA.
Disabling protocol filtering shows you red exclamation mark when UI is opened which was not the case with version 8.

a word of warning i do not know the final word yet but version 9 uses a whole different activation system so im unsure yet if previous lic's will work. im waiting for a response over at the eset beta forum. i have a number of unused sealed boxes i even just bought a few from newegg the 5 pc ones and now im really hoping they can be used. ill report back unless marcos does first.

The only thing worth noting is perhaps the new gui........although one is yet to get a look of it.

I only noticed slowdown, when first scan was running, besides that I haven't noticed any slowdown in any browser.

Can't make screenshot now, but here's what I've found http://www.dobreprogramy.pl/ESET-zm...ecie-juz-testowac-nowa-wersje,News,63342.html

I'm liking the GUI. We'll see if they can win me back with this one. I'm going to continue testing it.

see i much prefer the old one still but this one is growing on me. and in response to the lic thing here is the official response:

Yes, you can still use unused license keys for v9 activation and you will be able to convert your existing username/password to a new license key for final v9 release.

im guessing this change was due to all the eset pirating i have seen in the past all over the internet.

Good Morning! In regards to Online Banking...do they use a Sandboxed Browser like Avast and Kaspersky? Or is it a Silent Sentinel like G-Data's Component? Sincerely...Securon

I hope the gui get's a bit more color, or a live grid monitor ... as a pulsating worldmap, would be nice.
Like it was some years ago, when i tested Norton.

Beta is fast now, after my 3rd install...

Bad news since the SSL protocol scanning option has major issues with it in the testing I did. See my comments in the Kapersky Freak Vulnerabilty thread. Also see this posting over at the Eset forum: https://forum.eset.com/topic/4935-livegrid-protocol-filtering-and-https-scanning/ . Eset also doesn't appear to want to address those issues either.

If they just disallowed scanning of web sites with EV certs. that would at least make the feature usable.

-EDIT- One easy to implement suggestion I made to Eset was to allow for easy disabling of SSL protocol scanning via a setting on the Eset desktop toolbar icon. Eset appears to be ignoring the fact that SSL protocol scanning is illegal in many European countries and also in the U.S. on healthcare web sites covered under HIPAA legislation.

Why does it include banking protection when they say all it is is marketing.

I've compared EAV v.8 and v.9 advanced setting and found this differences:

    ThreatSense parameters:
ESET Live grid can't be disabled in ThreatSense parameters of individual modules
No more predefined file extensions - user has to exclude file extensions that they don't want to scan
Do not scan extensionless files option is gone

    On-demand computer scan:
Smart scan - objects: archives are not included in scan targets any more
Smart scan - other: Scroll scan log option is not present any more

    Removable media:
Do not scan option was added to scan actions that user can choose from

    HIPS custom rules:
When adding target files you can only choose between all files or specific files. You can't add whole folders (for me this is a big problem)
Hips advanced setting windows: there are no more details for specific rules shown beneath the rules. User has to open specific rule to check it out (less user friendly)

    Update:
Application update: only on/off switch, no more Ask before downloading program components option included (I never got this notification, but since it's gone I will have to disable application update)

    Protocol filtering:
Integrate into system option is gone, so I guess that driver can't be disabled
New option: "Record information necessary for ESET support to diagnose protocol filtering issues" (disabled by default)
Excluded applications: you have to manually add them. You could just select them from the list in v.8.

    SSL protocol checking:
SSL protocol filtering is ON by default
Three SSL filtering modes are introduced
Exclude communication secured by EV certificates is included and enabled by default

    Log files:
Enable text protocol is added which enables storage of log in alternative file format in addition to standard log files

    Diagnostics:
Submit system configuration data option was added. "Ask before submission" option is selected by default.

    User interface:
Graphical user interface can't be disabled any more
Application statuses: user can choose which application statuses will be displayed in Home section (nice option)
In-product messaging is added (product news and special offers) and enabled by default (will we start to see adds in ESET? hope not)
No more Preview option when configuring notifications (it was useful when setting it up)

Overall I like new GUI and redesigned advanced settings.
New version doesn't bring much new features (except adds?). OTOH some options useful to me are gone. That's why I'll probably stick with v.8 for some time.

Thank you, Eset!:thumb: This by default will exclude most banking web sites since they use EV certificates.

I suspect that the banking protection they are referring to relates to certificate pinning. Note that they will enable SSL protocol scanning by default. Also by default they will not decrypt site traffic with EV certs. However, they are probably still performing cert. chain validation to protect against man-in-the-middle activity.

-EDIT- I also believe that Eset should submit the SSL protocol scanning to an independent lab(QUALS, etc.) for SSL validation and certification. This will verify that their processing is equal to or better to that which currently exists in the three major browsers. This has been strongly recommended previously for all AV vendors with SLL protocol scanning feature.

Thanks for the review. I'm not liking the sound of most of it.
