Here’s what’s new: Improved support for Windows 10 The start menu searches modern PC settings for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Added new Midnight skin with dark background Added new flat Metro skin that uses the start screen colors New ability to apply settings from XML files from command line: use ClassicStartMenu.exe -xml <settings file> New setting to override the system DPI resolution only for the start menu New setting to change the user picture Improved support for touch and high resolution displays Added support for Scottish, Catalan, Macedonian and Persian languages Multiple minor improvements and bugfixes
I don't have installed the update module so I always download and install it over the existing version.
I never trust internal updaters. As long as you are getting it from their official site, just install it. I personally saved my settings as an XML file, uninstalled using REVO UNINSTALLER PRO FTW then rebooted then installed the new version and reimported my settings. I like to keep things super clean and tidy in my registry without using a registry cleaner
Why do it simply if it can be done intricately. Updating over the existing version is simple and smooth.
a lot of people do install over the top, I never do that......like ever........ I bought a good uninstaller (Revo Uninstaller Pro) so I wanna use it to make sure I have a fresh new clean start.......takes a minute more of my time? not a hassle to me.......to each his own...... Some people even install an AntiVirus over the top......I wouldn't do that to my own system even if you paid me...... messes my OCD
Cool to see that it still works on Win 10. I remember how this app has saved me from getting a high blood pressure on Win 8 (horrible Metro), this is always the first app that I install.
@Mortal Raptor Thanks for the post, it reminded me that I can change the start menu in Windows 10 in something more usable. Aside from not liking the design Windows 10 start menu, mine is partially broken and the search does not work properly. This wasn't an issue, until BleachBit killed my Windows 7 install a few days ago. But, now I'm stuck using Windows 10 until I figure out how to fix my Windows 7 install. I'm a registered user of StartIsBack+ so I will try that first, but if it leads to excessive CPU use under Windows 10 like the previous version did, I'll switch to Classic Shell.
StartIsBack+ was causing explorer.exe to use a lot of CPU time, just like the old version. However, to be fair, support for Windows 10 is only experimental at this point. I've just installed Classic Shell and it's working fine.
Any thoughts (especially with direct experience) about how necessary and/or relevant this will be to Win 10?? In a cursory review from various sources I gathered that Microsoft was going to ameliorate their sins of the past with Windows 8.
@StillBorn While there is a start menu in Windows 10, I greatly prefer a Windows 7 style start menu. In Windows 10 there are annoyances such as some really large icons, and some live icons which are updated from the internet. For examples, just take a look at this Google image search.
@roger_m Thank you, sir, for the prompt reply. I'm also on Windows 7 and appreciate the advances made from XP. I'll concede my laziness in not investigating whether or not Microsoft has rolled out a "big" operating system update for free. Have they in the past? Despite all the complaining about how Win 10 fails to strive and attain perfection, I'm willing to bet that a huge majority of the Microsoft users here at Wilders and elsewhere will jump on ship with this update--- for better or worse. Unless there's some serious compatibility issues with my hardware, I intend to do the same. I may have bumped in to a commentary or two about "subscription fees" for future updates which concerns me, but perhaps I digress. My guess is that a year from now an overwhelming majority will be situated on Win 10 and there will a questionable few stragglers that need to delve in the past. Let's hope that Win 10 will be as good as it could and should be.
To me this will be a must in Windows 10. I hate the Windows 10 start menu more than I did the start screen in 8. Plus, we may be upgrading to 10 at work, and I don't want to have to re-train everyone. That said, I know they are changing it again (the Windows 10 menu) in upcoming builds, so I will wait and see what they come up with.
There is a serious bug in StartIsBack+ since its release that I only discovered recently. I contacted the developer twice but no reply. Even posted on his twitter account but nada. That's what I get for buying something from someone who uses an @gmail.com address for his official work. Bug: Launch any program you want, let's name it program X now launch it again (not necessary if you already see it in the frequent programs list on the left when you click the start menu)..... now right click on it and choose, remove from this list.......say for instance.......at this time, you thought you don't want it to be on your frequent programs list but just want it to be in the ALL programs where it is located...... but let's say a few days later you decide oh I am actually using this program more often now, why isn't it showing up again on the frequent programs list?? that's it, it's gone forever from the frequent programs list and never coming back......any program you right click / remove is gone forever from the frequent programs list.... that is NOT how the actual Windows 7 start menu behaves........if you remove a program, then launch it a few times it comes back to the frequent programs list...... I also tested Start8 and it has the same issue......the only program which behaves 100% like the Windows 7 start menu in the sense that any program you remove from the frequent programs list, it'd come back if you launch it again.. not sure if that bothers you but that is the bug I spotted and never received proper support despite owning 7 licenses for StartIsBack+ and being one of his first supporters promoting it as the best Start Menu Alternative for Windows 8
With announced upgrade to Win 10 at the end of July, do you think it is needed to uninstall CS before the upgrade or can I leave it installed and upgrade to Win 10? Question for those who already use Win 10 ... Is Start menu in Win 10 good enough to face the CS?
@pegas I am using CS in Windows 10, because I don't like the native start menu, and find CS to be a huge improvment.
Thanks I thought that the native menu cannot stand against CS. I will be upgrading from 8.1, so do you think should I remove CS before upgrade to 10?
Prior to upgrading to Windows 10, I would suggest uninstalling CS temporarily. There are hooks involved and you never know what kind of complications that can cause during the upgrade process. There is probably a way to copy your personal CS settings and restore those settings to the appropriate directory once the upgrade is complete. Having said that, who knows how the Start menu will quite work by RTM. I'm sure that the looks will remain similar, but I'm hoping that additional functionality will be added. Once RTM comes along, do the upgrade after removing CS temporarily, and maybe give the new Start menu a try for a few hours/days after upgrade to see if it meets your individual needs. Like any changes, it can take some time for something new to grow on you, so to speak. I quite like it now. And I was a long-time CS user. I think CS is absolutely important for users on 8.x, but not so much on 10.
Many thanks for your valuable comments! I will follow your recommendations and will see if I can live without CS on Win 10.
is there any way to change your profile picture in the start menu? I've been looking, but can't see to figure it out .
