Hi I always have a problem with System Restore W 8.1 never saving more than one or two restore points. Sometimes it saves none. I have 100 gigs set aside for System Restore and it currently is using 7 gigs. It has only one auto saved restore point. I have made several restore points in the recent past. Any suggestions? Are there any "cleaner" type programs that might be erasing them? I use CC Cleaner-doubt that's the problem. Any other type programs that might be deleting restore points. Does W 8.1 use Shadow Copy?? I thought it did not. I'm using O&O defrag 18 and on the screesn it says "Shadow Copy Enabled"
Try disabling System Restore, rebooting, and then turning it back on. CCleaner can remove them, but you would have to go into that section and choose it. The built in Windows Cleanup will do it as well, but you have to clean up system files and select it was well. Sometimes Windows Update will remove some of them, depending on what the updates were. Shadow Copy service will likely be enabled by default, but not necessarily used, so O&O would be correct.
I have the same problem with windows 7 SR. After a lot of research it seems dual booting with XP is the problem. XP sees the win7 os and messes up the restore points. Do you dual boot?
I think I've only had System Restore work once. All other times it fails, or somewhat succeeds but with instability, bugs, etc. So I agree with Mayahana, it is garbage.
That's weird, System Restore has stopped making automatic restore points, I guess because Task Scheduler is broken on my Win 8 system?
Yeah, I've had a lot of problems with System restore in the past. Good idea, but lots of glitches here and there, and when you need it to work, your restore point are gone. CCleaner should show the restore points. Try rebooting, or seeing if you have enough space for it. If I were you, I'd start looking at other options of software that do the same.
Windows Restore is excellent in my opinion - when it works. As far as I know there is no similar replacement. The first time I ever used System Restore, it took a very long time to run (maybe close to half an hour) and it deleted almost all of the software I had installed. Quite a serious bug. I didn't have a backup to restore from either. But, I've never had a serious issue like that again/.
No it's broken, I still need to restore my system in order to fix this. But I have a feeling that System Restore doesn't work without it, another dumb choice of M$.
There is scheduled task that creates a restore point daily. Without that task running, restore points will still be created under certain circumstances, e.g. installing some software.
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Find Control Panel: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/where-is-control-panel
I have not seen it making restore points even after installing software, so something is wrong for sure. Well, there is nothing to worry about, IMO it's the fault of M$, it shouldn't be possible to break the Task Scheduler, no matter if you disable it yourself or if it's done by some other app.
Strange, I've been running XP in a dual boot setup with a Linux distro for at least 3 yrs, and didn't have a problem with retaining restore points. Well until a couple of days ago when all my restore points vanished, that is. I'm still trying hunt down the root cause but I'm certain the dual boot setup is not at fault. At this point it looks like one of my security programs did the deed. And it's looking like it may have been Avast. Because after uninstalling 2015.10.2.2215 the restore points have begun to repopulate.
Just as in Windows 7 and Vista, you can open the start menu and enter in schedule, and it will be found in the search results.
I did the same research a couple of years ago, as I suffered the same loss of restore points in Win 7 because I dual booted with XP. It seems to be a well recognised problem, I got round it by installing XP mode in a VM, within Win 7, now no loss of restore points. Gordon
Go into your System Restore settings and make sure it is enabled for your C drive. Sometimes system changes like changing to dual boot can stop it from working, and you need to enable it again.
Hi Roger, Both XP and Win 7 made restore points, the problem arose when booting into XP and then back into Win 7 the restore points are lost, which is a well recognised problem. There is a work around.... http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/127417-system-restore-points-stop-xp-dual-boot-delete.html but I went for the VM XP mode instead. To go back to the OP problem of loss of restore points (he doesn't dual boot) - some defragmenters are well known to erase restore points could that be the cause of your problem ? Gordon
