I can't believe this, I removed a folder from my desktop by mistake. Luckily the files where not that important, it were mostly video files that would be deleted anyway, but which software to use to recover them from the trash bin?

I have so far tried EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard Free and Recuva Free, and they can find some deleted files, but recovering does not seem to work. Is it even possible to get files back from a SSD?

And does anyone know if Win System Restore might get my files back? If not, I have a feeling I might have lost the files, biggest blunder ever. Should have backed it up, it was a 5 GB folder.

You can recover data from a SSD, but it's important to not install any recovery software to the same drive that has the lost data, as doing so may overwrite it.

Well, it doesn't look good, I've tried Active@ UNDELETE 10, it has a nice GUI, but I get the same results. I can't believe I messed it up, I'm now making a back up of all my files. And it seems that when you empty the recycle bin on a SSD, all data is gone, another lesson learned.

BTW, I'm a bit scared now, do you know if Windows System Restore will leave my data alone on the E drive, if I restore my C drive? I still need to restore my PC because of a problem with my Print Spooler. Another question: is it possible to protect certain folders against deletion?

Also, System Restore will probably not recover your files, and the changes made by it will most likely prevent recovery of your data. The important thing to note is that while you are trying to recover your data, you should not write to your SSD as doing so could overwrite your lost data.

No, at the moment I'm not, I did make a back up from my SSD to the internal HDD, but I didn't back up this particular folder because I would delete most files anyway, it were mostly videos downloaded from YouTube and Facebook. It's a bit ironic that in 20 years of computing, malware couldn't cause damage, and turns out that I was the biggest risk. :D

Yes, I see that these tools can simply not find most files, and if they do, they can't recover them, because they are overwritten, very disappointing. BTW, the thing that triggered this disaster was because I was trying to copy an image via XnView from the sandbox to the real desktop. So I decided to copy the whole folder to the desktop, but apparently it had the same name as an already existing folder, with the files that I lost, but I don't recall seeing a warning about this. So I deleted the folder after I was done, and all of a sudden I lost 5GB.

That is how the malware causes the damage. Imaging saves a lot of pain.

So the lessons learned are, make back ups at least once a week, but even more important, don't store files on the desktop! I've now made shortcuts on the desktop to folders with my data, if I had done this earlier, this would have never happened.

Doesn't matter where you keep them as long as you a) back them up, and b) image

5 GB? Ouch, that must have been a lot of stuff. I'd suggest something like Glary Utilities but it is similar to EaseUS & Recuva, so I'm not sure it will really work...

Sorry I wasn't much help, hopefully someone here has better suggestions.

ps. Make sure to back up now!

Yes, like I said before, it were mostly YouTube video files, I can't actually remember what most of the videos were about, but I didn't loose any sleep over it, so that's a good thing. But it's a wake up call, no matter how experienced you are, you should always be on your toes, it's quite easy to make mistakes when your copying, pasting and deleting files. It was truly a freak accident.

Thanks, but on my system the files were really not recoverable anymore, I'm very disappointed with these kinda tools, or perhaps I expected too much? I also wonder if it's perhaps harder to recover files from a SSD.

@Rasheed187 When the files are on your system driver, you need to do the recovery right away, because as data get written to the drive it reduces the chance of recovery, as the deleted data may be overwritten. Also, if you don't have recovery software installed, you need to run portable recovery software from another drive, as installing the recovery software on your system driver could overwrite some of the lost data.

    That's what I thought.

Which imaging app do you recommend?

    Hi Rasheed

My 1st choice would be Macrium V6, then AOMEI for simplicity IFW and Drive snapshot are also good. If you need help let me know.
