Our company has a guest wifi, but when you connect, the device can't browse anything, google etc. Someone brought in a laptop and hooked it up to the ethernet cable that was plugged into his desktop. It shows it is connected, but same thing, can't browse. I went into the adapter settings, IPv4 shows not connected, but IPv6 is connected. Any thoughts?
Generally if it shows it is connected, but you can't browse it's usually a DNS issue. But sometimes it can be DHCP, if the DHCP isn't being handed out, or the ARP tables are corrupted, this could happen. Depending on the appliance, this could be as simple as a missing policy. Did you flush the DNS, and release/renew on the laptop in question? One quick test, go into IPv4 settings on Windows, leave the DHCP alone, but set DNS primary/secondary on the laptop to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, then release/renew. If THAT laptop can connect then it means a DNS issue on the router, or whatever is handing DNS to your network. If it still can't browse, then it's either a policy, or a DHCP issue. Diagnostic is; 1) DNS 2) Policies/Rules 3) DHCP If it's none of those 3 then you have a big problem, and potential hardware issues. If a server handles your DHCP, then you need to go through troubleshooting on the server DHCP server, and work back.
I flushed the DNS on the lapto, still nothing. The desktop runs fine. It's the companies server, I'm leaning towards policy based.
Policy if you've ruled out DNS. Depending on device you may need to adjust policy order, or even add a new policy in. Manually set the DNS on the laptop to check and be sure, if it still can't surf, it's likely a policy. If you have IP banning, it could have banned the laptop, depending on appliance/wireless/settings. (client banning) Lots of variables to check.
