    How about:
1: anti autorun usb to prevent malware from infecting your machine
2: anti exe to prevent anything unknown from running
3: HIPS, to control what wants to run and what not

Give it a shot @ comodo. It used to have the ability to download database file and install it locally, not sure now. Has HIPS/BB/Sandbox which can do the job for offline uses....

Thanks for the suggestions. In my computer i use Avast but it asks for online registration so i can't install it to the computer i need. The problem is that because of the absence of internet connection, many people use USB disks and i think it is the main cause of being infected by virus. So i want to have at least an antivirus, even without online automatic updates, that will offer minimal protection.

Do you know if Clamwin and Clam Sentinel allow offline installation?

An outdated antivirus, without online automatic updates is totally useless, imo.

Why you don't use a portable AV instead?

Dr. WEB CureIt....You'd need to download a fresh copy every week or so.

And Panda USB Vaccine to prevent usb borne infections to your computer.

Because i will only install the antivirus software, i am not going to be the user of the computer. I think a portable antivirus only has manual scan.

If its only going to be used offline for extended periods why not consider something like Shadow Defender.

Install ClamAV, add Sentinel, and forget about it. The installed database is fine, turn on Heuristics, and it finds 'strange' stuff. It won't complain if it can't update it's database. At the very least, you have around 5,000,000 default detections in ClamAV, which seems to satisfy your desire for something with 'minimal' protection.

In the clamwin home page i read that it Please note that doesn't include an on-access real-time scanner. I have to manuallyscan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware. That's why i have to install clam sentinel?

Correct. Sentinel turns it into an online scanner. Sentinel works very well!

USA still the best. But barely.
OP longgggg time since I used Avast. But I used a throw away email address waited couple minutes & got a 14 month license. If it's still that way just register from another computer that has online access.

    Windows Defender Offline: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline

Put it on a cheap USB stick and have the people run a scan once a week by booting from the USB drive. Take drive to your place, run it from your PC to update sigs, and return to owner.

You can also burn it to a CD or DVD and have people boot from that. To update, just download a new copy, burn a new disk, and give to person.

Well, IMHO, it can be quite inconvenient to have an AV without automatic update. Maybe you can search for the files or folders where the virus definition of the AV is stored in the computer that has internet connection and regular virus definition update and have a copy of that, then save it to the AV files or folder of that computer which doesn't have internet connection. You may need to do that at least weekly. Other than AV, I would also recommend MCShield as USB AV but you still need to know where is the virus definition stored and keep it updated.

imo you may want to consider other methods, i personally would never fully trust any av that can not be updated. i know the first install comes with a baseline of detections but who is to say someone doesnt install a usb drive or something into the machine with a newer piece of malware that the old detections can not detect. as someone mentioned i know its annoying but something like a hips or (and i cringe saying this) but like a default deny system from commodo could be a better choice.

is there a chance it will have connection at all once in a while? then any av with good hueristics would work well.

if you must go with an av the choices are pretty much all stated here already.

  22. Ask youself, what is worst?
    1. On-line registration
    2. The agreements of the legal usage contract you are committing yourself to when using the software,
    3. The company's privacy policy
    4. The integrity of the judicial system monitoring the companies activities you have legally engaged with?

    Just my 2 cents :argh:

    For him, I suppose this:
a computer that doesn't have internet connection

  24. Anon, thx

So USB is the only threatgate . o_O. . simply limited user with free Voodoo shield to implement a default deny execute would be easier I guess

you need an antivirus that does not rely on signiture update, like a hip or whitelisting app. Like voodoo or secureaplus.
