C:\ device was red when 'Computer' screen was opened. This was a big surprise as I had just completed a W7 defrag and I had 177GB of free space with 287GB space used. The reason for the defrag was because my C:\ drive was at 6%. I got back 61GB of free space. After that I decided to delete some old incremental backups from the local HDD as I have been using an external HDD for backups for the past year. I had 5 backups to delete and the product instructions recommended deleting them one at a time, starting with the last one created. It was only 2000MB. There was no option to delete everything at once and the backup folder is hidden and protected by windows. I selected the last one (2000MB) for deletion and 3 hours later it was still running so I thought it was weird. I put in a thumb drive to do some other work and the computer screen opened. The C:\ device icon was red. There was 11GB remaining. I had received no audible alert.

I'd like to know if there is an audible alert that I could set for this, If anyone knows, I'd really appreciate it. Do not want this ever happening again.

NB: Before absolute disaster reined down on me I ended the backup task. I then made some system changes so I could view the backup folder and delete the backups manually. It took about 2 secs to do it this way.

I presume, all you need to do is to backup solely to your external drive, and then your internal hard drive shouldn't have issues will low space free.

Yes, of course. My backups were going local because a family member borrowed my external drive for some school work. I now have it back. I think the backup delete program was looping and it created the low space issue. It should never have reached the critical stage though.

Having only 11GB free is not critical, Windows 7 will continue to run and boot fine. Really the only problem you will get a drive becomes nearly full is reduced performance. If you are always going to backing up to an external drive then you shouldn't encounter the same free space issue again anyway.

I think you misunderstood what I was doing at the time. I was not creating a backup, I was deleting an old backup that was 2000MB. I had 177GB free space before I started the task.

That's strange behaviour. What backup software are you using?

Yes Rescue it is. V4.30.0025.00 (up to date). I checked out the Lenovo Forum for any posts on issues regarding the deleting of incremental backups. Could not find anything on looping or the C:\ device going red line. There were several complaints about the delete option taking forever.

Your best bet may be to post at the Lenovo Forum, as I only have very limited experience with Rescue and Recovery.

No worries. First I will uninstall and re-install a fresh copy of the program as the one I have might be corrupted. I'll test to see if the same thing happens and if it does, it will warrant a post over there. Tnx roger_m.

I've been researching why I did not receive a Low Disk-Space Alert from Windows. I found out that the device has to go down to 200MB before Windows responds and the notification balloon does not appear until 10 minutes after it reaches 200MB. MS decided to change it from 1 minute to 10 minutes (no reason given).

What if it had dropped to 200MB and I had not seen the notification in time, would it have kept going until it reached zero? Seems so. Also appears that there is no way to set an alert using system monitor.performance anymore. Seems all hard coded and no user over ride allowed, short of a registry hack.
