New Tool to Check for Software Updates

Seems that Kaspersky just released a tool to check for software updates but there's no info on the Kaspersky website/forum except this article on Neowin:

Tested, installed successfully on Windows 7 x64, uninstall is fine too.
It could be nice if a up-to-date machine provide a detailed report, not a empty one, otherwise i trust this tool, of course it's Kaspersky.

 

I've just installed this. It's a shame the list of software it checks for updates to is so small. I'll keep in installed to see how future versions progress, but it won't be replacing FlashGet, Baidu's PC App Store or Allmyapps for me.

 

Won't replace SUMo here.

 

I'd like to find a decent replacement for Secunia PSI 2.

Sane here, it looks very basic and bundles a lot of junk, but it is still the best update manager out there.
I guess, that Kaspersky Updater will be more focused on security updates for commonly vulnerable software.

 

Looks as if it's checking only 16 applications for now.

Until it's checking 1,016 I believe Kyle has no worries.

@Krusty13: Have you tried Kyle Katarn's SUMo as an adjunct/replacement for Secunia's PSI?

No I haven't used SUMo but I don't like the idea of "bundles a lot of junk". That's something Secunia doesn't do, not that I allow PSI to do the updating anyway. If PSI notifies me that a program needs patching I go to the vendor's site and download the new version.

 

The lite installer has no extras.

 

I came across another software updater; very well done, but hidden within another product, or I should rather say bundled. It's not Avast, I just hope I can get hold of it again and report here...

Well I installed it. In my case it searched for updates for just six of my installed programs. It found an update for Adobe Flash Player, but for some reason is unable to download it, I'm not sure why. If you buy the paid version, it includes a malware scanner.

Edit: I spoke too soon it did silently update flash.

 

Oh, so it sounds like it will only update the basic programs, just like the Kaspersky tool in post #1 and isn't a Secunia PSI replacement.

 

I still find FlashGet to be the best way to check for and download updates.

 

To the best of my understanding, FlashGet is a download manager only. It is not a tool to use for checking for updates to programs like Sumo or Secunia PSI.

 

It's a download manager, but it is also an excellent tool for checking for updates. If you open FlashGet and right click on any file you've downloaded there is a "Check for update..." option. When you select this FlashGet checks to see if the file has been changed since it was downloaded, and if it has it downloads it again.

I just go to the downloaded files, press Ctrl A to select them all then do a check for update, to check for and download updates to any of the files I've downloaded with FlashGet. I used to have an update category I made where I put all the downloads I wanted to check for updates to. Currently, I don't need to do this, as I only use FlashGet to download installers I want to check for updates to.

You can't check for updates with the current versions of FlashGet, but I'm using legacy version 1.73. In the past I used v1.96 and had some issues. I was told that v1.73 is more stable.

@MerleOne I just tried R-Updater and it's go a few issues.
Not only has the program not been updated for 4 and a half years, it incorrectly identifies some programs, and some of the "updates" found were actually older verisions of software than the version installed. However, it did find a few actual updates.

R-Tool's paid products are excellent though. For example R-Drive Image can create an image of a drive with bad sectors on it, whereas other software usually stops when it encounters an error.

 

Yes, I am a fan of R-Drive Image and R-Studio, the best file recovery tool IMHO.
