I do not know what you mean by saying "level of security" for OpenVPN in Linux. The images that you linked do not help me at all. I do not use GUI clients. Maybe others can help with that. PIA seems to be a safe VPN.
From what I can see, this is a problem with the way the PIA client is working in your system, not with PIA. I don't use Linux but the client program settings in the images are the same that generic OpenVPN has in a .ovpn file. You should be able to log onto the PIA website and download .ovpn files and try them with plain OpenVPN. The client you are using just might to be run as root to change settings.
i guess what he means by "level of security" is encryption, authentication and handshake settings in pia's client. as far as i know, you can not change those settings if you use openvpn software with pia. if you want to use higher encryption you have to use pia's client. someone correct me if i'm wrong.
you can either try another provider such as airvpn which allows higher encryption settings for openvpn or stick with pia and keep using default settings. that's for you to decide. because only you know if you need higher encryption for your online activities.
So with PIA's Windows client, you can choose different encryption settings? Whatever those settings might be, I'm sure that they would work with stock OpenVPN in Linux if you modified the config file appropriately. Could someone please post examples?
