There are several office programs to choose from other than Microsoft. Such as Open Office, Libre Office, Ashampoo office and the list goes on. My question is which program is the most compatible with Microsoft Office? As always I appreciate all replies and would thank you in advance. John
Compatibility as in being able to display documents created by MS Office properly? I don't know how other office suites would handle office documents created by the newer MS Office suites, but at least from MS Office 2007 and below I can confirm that WPS Office (formerly Kingsoft Office) and LibreOffice Fresh handle them pretty well.
By compatibility I mean with not only documents but presentations, spreadsheets, and databases. Sorry I didn't make myself very clear. I recently downloaded LibreOffice, haven't installed it yet, and I was waiting to see how others responded. I do volunteer work for our local military base and of course they have the latest Microsoft Office. As I will be receiving all the above in Microsoft Office I hoped LibreOffice would be my answer. I will just have to install LibreOffice and hope for the best. Thanks again for your reply!
I don't work with spreadsheets and presentations, but they should be compatible with LO. But yes, better be sure and test it yourself to be certain. The military got the latest MS Office? Wow, that is kind of... glamorous. =V We are lucky to have MS Office 2010 here.
You ll be fine. All you have to do is set correctly the Libre Office program that opens a particular MS Office document. For example, if you receive a Word document, you ll set those to open with Libre Writer. Or Excels files with Calc, etc. Then later, when you receive one of this files again, you just click on then and they ll open up using the Libre program. When you create documents, save them in MS Office formats, like DOC, xls, etc. That way people who you send them to, wont have a problem opening them up. Libre works good and is easy to get used to. One thing is to open and read Office docs from LibreOffice. Another, very different, thing is to edit these docs and save them back in Office formats. To do this, you will have to learn many details about the operation of LibreOffice, and many incompatibilities will arise.
I have WPS office to be the most compatible with MS Office. I use it on my Android tablet. I can work on MS Office on my laptop and seamlessly with the files on WPS office on the tablet.
Former Windows Office, now LibreOffice user, no problems so far (3 years). I second @anon, LibreOffice former OpenOffice seems to me as the best alternative for Win and OfficeSuite for Android.
