I used Kingo on several Samsung phones. It has worked well for me and as far as I know it's a well-regarded program. Rooting is needed to install custom mods and some apps (mostly cracked ones). It gives you more control over the phone (admin rights), but it may void the warranty on your phone (although you should be able to unroot it), and if you mess it up it can brick your phone (break it so it becomes as useless as a brick). The biggest inconvenience to rooting is that when you update the phone's OS or firmware, you may have to reroot it, which means you have to remember what procedure you used before and then worry all over again that you'll brick it. (I think bricking is very rare though, especially with Kingo, but I think it used to be more common back in the old days when people were just learning how to root different phones).
I have used it along with a number of other rooting tools. I root all my phones and tablets, and no one rooting tool supports all devices. So it may or may not work for your phone. The following are some fairly common rooting tools: SRSRoot Root Genius Vroot Wondershare MobileGo One of the advantages of rooting is that some battery saving apps like DU Battery Saver can underclock your phone's CPU when it is locked to save on power usage.
