    Hello,

    I have searched and searched in the hope to find some kind of list with web browsers that let you choose to have the tabs below the address bar/on bottom. And I still haven't found one so I thought why not create one. If such list does already exist then I blame my search skills.

    Do you know of an existing list then just post it here!

    I read on several places that it was possible to have the tabs "on bottom" in Firefox (hadn't used it for years) great I thought, so I decided to try it, and I went through the browser settings several times but I just didn't find anything connected to the tabs position...what the heck do I miss something here? Turns out there is no native in-built browser setting to make them show up below the address bar that I expected to find. So I looked around and it seems the only way to make it happen was to 1. install an add-on, or 2. use a userChrome.css file.

    I tried number 2 and it did indeed work, very simple.

    I know more than one person that prefers to have the tabs on bottom, but I don't think one should need to install a browser to find out if it is possible or not, or spend time going through forum thread after forum thread. So I want to create a list of browsers that allows you to have the tabs "on bottom" without the need to install an add-on, by using a .css file like with Firefox(or some similar way), or if the browser has in-built settings for this then even better.

    I am not a person that try out new browsers that often, so Firefox is the only browser I know of. But I'm sure that some of you know more about the tab situation than I do.

    If each browser had a setting for tabs "on top/on bottom" in-built then a list like this wouldn't be needed.

    To get the tabs "on bottom" in latest FireFox try this:

    1. Follow these instructions.
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css

    2. Copy everything below "code:" into the file.
    Code:
    @namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

    #TabsToolbar{-moz-box-ordinal-group:10000!important}
    3. Now you should have the tabs on bottom.

    -----------------------

    Browsers with in-built options for the tabs.

    In the browser Pale Moon they are "on bottom" by default.

    In the browser Maxthon you can choose to have them "on top" or "on bottom".

    In the browser CyberFox you can choose to have the tabs "on bottom", on top is default.

    Pale Moon has tabs on bottom by default and allows you to put them on the top if you want. I'll never use that garbage browser that breaks half of the internet though.

    Also, I use Classic Theme Restorer on Firefox and it has the option to put tabs on bottom

    Great to hear that the Pale Moon devs got it right from the start by having this option built-in :thumb:

    Yes I read about that add-on, it's just that I find it silly that a user would need to install an add-on for something as simple as this, even if that particular add-on has more functions. So I only want to list browser that either as them on bottom by default, or gives the user a choice between on top/on bottom and has it in-built like Pale Moon and Maxthon, or by using a small tweak to get it done like with the current FireFox.

    Thank you all for your posts.
    I hope users of other browsers post as well, if it is possible in more browser that is, which I hope.....:doubt:

    Hi SweX,

    Member Blacknight mentioned Opera; it will permit the customized placement of any toolbar. Here is a screen shot of the Tab Bar options:

    I am using v. 12.10

    regards,

    IE app on Win 8 has tabs on the bottom. Does anyone know if it can be done in the desktop IE?

    You can do it in Opera 11/12 (and older), but you can't do it in IE 8 and up. There is also no option in Chrome and Opera 26. You need an extension for it in Firefox.

    It seems like all browsers that are using the Webkit/Blink engine don't offer this feature at all. I can't take browsers seriously if they don't offer this feature, it's sickening. Asking me to switch to "tabs on top" is like asking me to switch from Windows to a Mac, I just can't do it.

    I just found out that it also can NOT be done with Maxthon v3 and v4. Probably because it's based on IE 10 and 11.

    I'm pretty sure it could be done (right at the bottom) on Mx version 3. I believe that version can still be downloaded from their site.

    No, I've checked it, they removed this option in v2.5, and it has never been available for v3, you can still download v3.5 from the site.
    I think it depends on the engine/framework that browsers are using, like I said, none of the Web-kit/Blink based browsers offer it.

    Yes old browser are nice to have, I use them for casual surfing but not while doing banking/shopping obviously, but some websites really suck with old browser, and they tend to work much better with newer browsers. Flash also tend to crash on many websites while using older browsers, but while going to the same sites in newer browsers it works like a charm.

    @Rmus

    Great, if all browser gave us 4 choices like that....then choosing what browser to try and use would be much easier for everyone. :thumb: Though like I said to Rahseed in the browser war thread, on bottom for me, is not that far down as in your screenshot. If you choose "Top" where does the tabs show up then, below or above the address bar?

    Tabs "on top" for me is like in Chrome, and I don't like that at all.
    Tabs "on bottom" for me is under the bookmarks bar, which is exactly where I want them.

    I have never heard anyone say that they like/want the tabs on bottom and mean close to the windows taskbar before Rasheed said that in the other thread, but I have never used Opera (I was going to try it before they screwed up their bookmarks system) which is probably why I have never heard anyone say it like that until now. :D

    You seam to have adamant views on a lot of things, and mostly negative.
    I remember you using the expression Taiwanese junk, which had me worried considering the amount of hardware made in the island. But maybe you were referring to their junk food industry or their bond market.

    As to Palemoon I can assure you it is neither garbage nor does it break half of the Internet; it is a valid and recommended alternative and to many (including myself) it is a first choice.

    By reading this thread now I know that I am not all that alone about liking tabs not on top (under URL bar). To me, tabs not on top feels more comfortable. Classic theme restorer for Firefox is the addon that I use to get my Firefox functioning and looking like old browsers used to.

    I admit that I'm a Pale Moon fanboy, so my statement has a high possibility to be biased. But I am not aware of any websites that does not view well in Pale Moon, let alone breaking it. I honestly don't remember having such experience even with Firefox either.

    Oh look, you're not using the latest version of *insert the name of a web browser you are currently using here*, so you can't use our website at all. Go back home!

    Such jerks, I hate it when they do that. It's not like the website is not going to be functional if I use the older version. :rolleyes:

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    I actually prefer the tabs to be on top, but that's just me. :cool: BTW, Cyberfox also has an option to configure the placement of tabs, just like Pale Moon. Although the default is "tabs on top", as can be seen in this screenshot:

    Hi SweX,

    I keep my Tab Bar at the top and my Address Bar at the bottom. If both are at the top, this is what it looks like -- the Tab Bar is above the Address Bar:

    Hi Rmus, I see thanks. To be able to customize the browsers like that without the need to install some add-on is always nice IMO.

    @GrafZeppelin

    Thank you, I added CyberFox to the list of browsers with in-built options in the OP.

    Yes I know, it's not that they say "your browser was made in 1980 time to update mate" more like the website is extremely sluggish, especially newer and/or refreshed websites with some flashy "modern" design...Ye right. I never recommend anyone to stay with an browser that no longer is updated. But I personally HATE changing browsers and need to get used to a new one when I have it all perfectly set up in the bookmarks bar and all that, plus the tabs is where I want them. And when you try to "import" the bookmarks they usually end up in one folder and then you have to sort them out. And then we have the font style, they can also look differently between browser, and no matter how hard you try it simply won't look the same as in your old browser.

    @bo elam

    Yes I figured there must be more users that likes "on bottom" better. :D

    Personally I have no big issues with the look of Firefox, and I am not a huge add-on user, so when I found the css file trick, it felt unnecessary to install an add-on for one purpose which was to get the tabs back in place...on bottom.

    I want to point out that I only want to mention current up-to-date browsers in my OP to make sure anyone trying them get browser updates and security patches for the browser, as non Wilders members can read the forum too and may give one of them a try. But it is perfectly fine to mention older browsers as well such as older versions of Opera for example. Of course if it is possible in the latest Opera version to have the tabs on bottom, then I will add that to the list as well. But I don't feel like installing latest Opera to find out, I have searched around but haven't found an answer yet.

    It's probably because the first tab-based browser that I used was Maxthon, and after that I switched to Opera. If I recall correctly, IE 7 started this "tab on top" trend, Chrome copied it. Firefox always offered an option to choose (just like Opera Presto), which is the way it should be. The funny thing is, I only care about this when it comes to browsers, I'm not bothered by it in tools like EditPad Lite and System Explorer, for example.

    Yes, that was in Maxthon v2. But now that I think of it, v2 still runs on Win 8 with IE 11, so in fact it shouldn't have anything to do with the "framework". This means that browser makers should be able to offer the "tabs on bottom" feature on any Trident and Gecko version. I'm not so sure about Webkit/Blink though.

    I like the browser that way for same reasons than you. I am glad to know that I am not alone.

    OK. I'm pretty sure I experimented with the tabs right at the bottom though, and I've never run Mx with the Trident browser core. I must have been using the Gecko engine, but I'm not so sure this couldn't be achieved with WebKit.

    I understand, but to be honest IE 7 is so far back I don't really remember how the tabs worked in it. :D And Yes, it's a shame Firefox no longer has in-built options for the tabs, they should make it easier for the users not harder by only pushing "on top" on their users.

    Tabs sharing the space with top of the window just makes sense, and not consuming our needed browser view space. I remember with XP making special things to make my top of window head shallower.

    Now that I have 2 screens and the desktop screen being not so tiny, of course I could have some space to admire the tabs, or have even a menubar shown lol. I prefer not.

    Also it is the most logical solution. Apps on bottom tabs (hidden when not needed) and the browser window tabs on top.

    And not to be mixed with our bookmark folders. Just some thoughts to you guys and girls whining about tabs on bottom :p
