One would expect low performance from free VPS's but you guys might know better. What are some decently performing VPS providers as of January 2015? Before you say "it's not secure" or "if you think there is a free lunch, you are the lunch", may I point out I only want them to store encrypted data. Encrypted by myself locally. It has to support sshfs because I intend to access the data with sshfs-fuse, as if it were an NFS drive that is mounted on your pc. Why not free cloud storage? Because software like dropbox needs to download a duplicate of all your data to your local hard drive so if there is no local hard drive, dropbox is not an option. At least not for files larger than available ram.
Or even better, support for GFS2 (probably in debian repo's) would be ideal. So you can use several VPS's from different providers to make one drive, for redundancy or RAID-10-like performance. And also to protect your rear from anything malicious going on in one VPS.
Well, there's AWS. I've also come to like DigitalOcean. LowEndBox is a good source. I don't know GSF2. But beware of latency. You might have better luck with Tahoe-LAFS. Edit: Oh, you said "free". Sorry Don't know free. But many cost just a few USD per month.
With Tahoe-LAFS, if you want to change one byte in a 1 GB file, does the entire 1 GB have to be transfered? Do you normally have full access to the repo's of the chosen distro?
Yes. But you could use differential archiving as a workaround. Even so, without local storage, you'd still need to download the root archive plus all differentials. Best would be using many small files, rather than few large files. They seem to be installation images. Yes.
