v2.0 has been released. Previous Wilders thread: UltraSearch: free search program that uses Master File Table for speed.
I've preferred it over Everything due to being more portable (no background caching), up-to-date (Everything was dead for the longest time), and better 64-bit compatibility (Everything had problems searching within the System32 folder) in my experience. I'm still using it now, and see no reason to switch. It was a bit slow before unless I clear my settings after a while, but now they fixed that.
Cool, I was searching for such a tool, I hate it when they depend on a database. That's also why I like WizTree (it reads the MFT), it's super fast.
It reads the MFT and stores that info in a file, just like Everything (Everything.db). MrBrian posted about UltraSearch because of the MFT thing, right?
The way I understood it, is that UltraSearch does not make a database of all files, so it never needs to update the index, it just reads the MFT. So when it comes to this, it's more advanced than the other tools mentioned.
I would say it's different. But, I'm not sure "more advanced" is correct. Why is not using a db "more advanced"?
Because it's faster, tools that don't read the MFT directly, will first need to make a database, and after that they will need to update it when files are added and deleted. So when it comes to this aspect, UltraSearch is more advanced.
Does anyone know if you can configure UltraSearch to search for only certain file extensions? For example, let's say I want to search only for .jpg, .png and mp4 files. Perhaps someone knows another tool that can do this?
