Anyone using Spybot these days?

I don't seem to find much mention of it on forums, etc. Here's my problem.
Every time I run Spybot I get pretty much a clean bill of health, apart from the following-----

"Description"
Somoto.BetterInstaller
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\sdp
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\sdp(64bit)

I then hit "Fix selected issues" and it supposedly does so, but the next time I run Spybot it is there again.
Any suggestions what I can do to get rid of it permanently?
I'm running W7 Pro 64-bit

But on the question of "Anyone using Spybot these days?" I can't say I am these days.

I miss those golden days of when I first used Spybot to clean up systems. I think they still have very competent people, it's just the resources to keep track of all the new samples is insane lately.

 

I don't use it myself, and I don't know anyone else that use it these days either.

 

One user here recently found S&D was the only product that removed a particular piece of malware he was infected with.. I believe that was about a month ago, but I forgot his name.

Ohhh...... déjà vu. These were nice days. Golden era of spyware n adware. No rookies, booties and complex malware. I miss those days.

 

Yep Giant, S&D w\ tea timer, Lavasoft. But haven't in years..there is one more can't think of the name, had a pic of a cheetah on it.

 

Nope, moved on to better programs these days. Doesn't help that they bloated it up.

 

There was a revamp a couple of years ago which totally bombed in every way (GUI,resourse usage,detection rates etc).

Back in it`s hayday it was up there with A-squared and Adaware as a top antispyware scanner.

Maybe there`ll be be another go at a revamp where everything goes right ?

Must have saved a lot of machines in it`s day.

About 13-14 years ago I was introduced to Spybot...probably the first AV I ever heard of. You're right....the good old days.

 

I installed Spybot a few months ago to get it a try as I had not used it in a very long time. I was not impressed. There was no good reason to use it, so I uninstalled it.

I remember the days when Spybot was excellent.

 

As I used it awhile back, I don't currently use it now.

If it offered better detection and wasn't such an awkward UI...Sure, I would use it again.

Right now, I am quite pleased with just using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Emsisoft Emergency Kit as my On-demand scanners.

 

Spybot was one of the first dedicated anti-spyware apps I used back in 2004, but from personal experience it is not as effective as it once was and I no longer use it. About two years ago my friend had an adware infection that was popping up advertisements, so I downloaded Spybot and scanned with it. It detected the infection and went through its cleaning process and to my disappointment, not only did it fail to completely remove it but the adware was still capable of functioning, popping up advertisements as before. After this I uninstalled it from my computer. It used to be good but there are better free alternatives out there.

 

Many thanks to stapp, for the link. I will try to wade through the registry and see what I can find.
All the other comments about Spybot have me wondering. If Spybot is old fashioned and not really up to it, why is it the only thing that detects this malware? I run MalwareBytes on a regular basis and it never picks it up. I have temporarily installed others with the same negative results. Strange.

 

Glad to hear old Spybot still has a trick up it`s sleeve.

since spybot got bloated it really sucks. not to blame the bitdefender engine, but the additional code in spybot including teatimer (tt should protect registry - doh) and immunisation (locks critical updates - doh) is complete crap. and in our forum we always have to moan that spybot detects close to nothing of adware like almost other av-products. in most cases in combination with other av-product it seems it blocks those other av-programs to do their work.

our recommendation is still malwarebytes, adwcleaner and maybe JRT/FRST. most to blame users who are working as admin or with admin rights - work with lua and you dont have such adware trouble.

IIRC Spybot S&D was one of the first apps I installed along with Ad-Aware, but that was many years ago. I also remember using Ewido Anti-Spyware which was also popular. Giant AS also at one time made it onto my machine
