I recently shifted from v5 to v8, I did a in place upgrade, although it kept most settings it didn't keep all.

My question is are v6+ actually any harder against protection than v5? I don't care for gimmicky features just rootkit, malware detection rates.

Reason I ask is v8 definitely feels slower than v5, not just system usage but also in the gui, e.g. the options dialog box opens instantly on v5 but there is a notable pause on v8 with a cpu spike when opening it.

There doesn't seem to be any significant delay when opening advanced setup. I've made a quick test; with v5 it opened instantly while with v8 it took about a second to open it. This could be caused by the fact that v8 has more protection features and settings that need to be read from the registry and configuration data files than older versions.
If it takes longer on your computer, export your current configuration and perform a clean install with default settings to find out if advanced setup opens faster when no custom rules are created.

Kindly please discuss possible issues in our official forum https://forum.eset.com where your posts would get better attention of ESET staff and other users.

Instead of troubleshooting the slow down I would do a clean install to see if it solves that for you by uninstalling and then start over fresh with v8. You can export the settings before uninstalling if you like. Even if over the top installs are supported a lot have changed in the program between v5 - v8 so I wouldn't have installed v8 over v5 for that reason.

Yes is is worth using v8 as it includes several new improvements (no bloat) that is not present in v5 and v6 for example.

You can read more about the detection and protection features in V8 here: http://www.eset.com/int/about/technology/

Edit: the forum was in maintenance mode so I didn't see that Marcos had already posted before.

I rather hear from a non ESET rep on this.

That page doesn't give me any useful information, its just a marketing page for features, not a changelog.

Also a second to open a simple dialog box I consider excessive, instead of guessing can you go back to your devs and ask why v5 is instant and v8 takes a second?

Marketing? If that is marketing to you then I have seen much worse than that, but if the info on that page about how the features in the products actually work won't suffice, then good luck finding more detailed info elsewhere. :isay:

    Changelog?
    http://www.eset.co.uk/Download/ChangeLog/ESSH

It takes 0.5 - 1.0 second to open for me (non ESET rep btw), I am not sure exactly how long....can't tell the difference to be honest.

Why do you think that he is guessing?

You have not mentioned if ESET is all you run in real-time(some like to run 54 things), and what Win OS you use.

As a non ESET rep I will again recommend you to uninstall and do a fresh V8 install. After that let us know how the software runs.
You could run the ESET uninstaller in safe mode if you like it won't leave anything behind.

I think answer to this question addresses in one way at the below link as swex pointed out - "Newer protections/technologies introduced..."
    http://www.eset.com/int/about/technology/

If i were you and facing the same problem/s, i would ask them to investigate system heaviness rather than opening settings menu. As this is not a frequent operation and would only do this when trying to change some thing.. :)

Reg. System Slowness, can you do a clean install as suggested above. I am interested to see if it solves the problem for you.

Reg. opening setting menu, i do see it taking probably a second. But never cared much..

    @harsha_mic

You might want to update your lappy(in sig) to the v8 final that has been released.

Yes, unless this has changed very recently, you can use any version you want from V3 to V8 as long as the license is valid :)

did you read the url you posted :)

    great changelog

    "8.0.304

    21/10/2014
    ◾New version release
    "

    LOL

But anyway after trying the disaster that was webroot, I am now back to nod32 and got a brief idea of how bad the competition can be. I still plan to try webroot on another pc but am back to nod32 v8 now.

Incidently when I reinstalled v8 it wasnted to do a scan, I scanned all of my C: docs folders, and it took an absolute age, it was barely updating one file per second in the log window, even small txt files. Its fine now its scanned, but the scan was really slow.

I still think v8 is noticebly slower than v5 and I still don't know how its better than v5, I find exploit blocker and enhanced memory scanner too vague terms.

For more information about the unique ESET's protection features, please refer to http://www.eset.com/int/about/technology.
My favorite feature is Advanced memory scanner which always blocks about 90% of new-borne malware that I find on the web without the need to update.

As of version 7, a first-time scan is run after a couple of minutes after installation. It scans files on disks to find potential malware or PUAs and to cache information about files to ensure that 100% clean files are not scanned again which significantly improves subsequent scans (requires Live Grid and Smart optimization to be enabled). The scan should be relatively quick, however, if you have a lot of large archives (e.g. iso files) on the disk that need to be unpacked and each file to be scanned, it may take even hours for the scan to complete.
Try running a scan with archives disabled to see the difference.

ESET has substantially improved the speed of scanning not only by using Live Grid cloud whitelist but also by improving Advanced heuristics a couple of months ago which sped up code emulation by dozens of percent in some cases.

You can find an interesting test of how products perform in on-demand scan of new-borne threats at https://threatcenter.crdf.fr/?Stats where ESET constantly leads by about 10-15%.

So why does ESET always suck so bad in these tests when it comes to performance:

Only AV-Test has the answer to your question, it is the same story every month in their tests.

Well, not "always" in every test: http://www.av-comparatives.org/performance-test-suites-october-2014/

But don't change from Norton now when you finally found a product that you like. :D

To be fair the slow scan wasn't a big deal as nod32 is fast on realtime scanning. The scan is a one off after installation so no big deal, also now if I repeat the scan its way faster for the reasons you said. There wasn't any iso files to scan but I had what I think was a fair few self extracting exe's like nvidia drivers.

What is the best HIPS setting? currently I put in smart mode which seems the most logical, and enabled it to log blocked actions.

There must be some strange testing methodology that allows McAfee and Kaspersky to get high results on the performance part (oh and Bitdefender too) while ESET gets average, some of the worst...... I really wish there was an explanation

and no I am not changing my Norton Security after a long fight with trying diff. AV Solutions but I still have a 5 PC / 2 year license for NOD32 so I hope that one day when the performance issues have been fixed I would be able to use it again. Don't ask what performance issues, I feel a whole drain on the system with NOD32 installed compared to other solutions. Not wanting to diss NOD32 or anything it's been my fav. AV since 8 years until v7 and v8 arrived that spoiled it for me

I agree v5 definitely faster than v8, but so far its the fastest I tried, although I haven't tried any recent Kaspersky or Norton.

When do you observe performance drag? If it's upon launching certain applications, it could be HIPS/Advanced memory scanner that comes into play when an application is launched. Older versions than v6 don't have Advanced memory scanner included yet.
Advanced memory scanner is very strong at detecting new malware. It shouldn't have a noticeable impact on performance when common applications are used but with specific applications performance issues may occur.
You can try to narrow it down by disabling particular modules / options, one at a time, to find out which one affects the performance most. Then we can think of what could be done to lessen the impact on performance.

I have stopped trying to figure out why ESET score so badly in the performance test by AV-Test a long time go.

Yes I know you have issues, and I would like them sorted, but I don't think ESET will be able to sort them out if you don't give them some details about it. I would let ESET know if I had a "whole drain" on the system. The web speed issue is at least being looked into, and it seems that it is not a bug in ESET software that cause this but an issue with the WFP (Windows Filtering Platform) but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. The problem is, when complaining about performance, they ask you to try with HIPS disabled, HTTP scanning disabled, now that's not how I would like to run the AV.

The bigger problem is, I cannot tell you or them exactly what is slow, call me crazy, but I notice my system is slower when using NOD32 vs other solutions.

Maybe you haven't felt this because you don't try other solutions BUT, my feelings in addition toi the AV-TEST results, must raise some flags you know.

I think the first thing ESET needs to do, is check the testing methodology of the performance aspect of ESET's products that is leading to them to have a 3.5 rating. I don't think AV-TEST has anything personal with ESET there must be a reason why I feel my system is slower on overall and AV-TEST in their tests. Now if that can be rectified, to reach at least a 4.5 rating or a 5/5 rating like the heavy Kaspersky/McAfee/Bitdefender do, then I'd be more than happy to try it again.

I am an old user of NOD32 since v2 and it's been my favorite AV and still has the best interface out there. I just wish ESET actually did take notice of how many users have uninstalled it due to the "Affecting PC performance" in the survey they offer when uninstalling it, I have done that at least 20 times I can tell you.

    Regards,
